Hello,

I am in the process of building a system, and decided to sneak a peak at the Socket 939 Motherboards with PCI Express. This system will most likely have a AMD64 3200+ CPU. Here are my questions:

(1) What boards are suggested and where can I find one? These seem very hard to find right now. I would like to find a 939 / PCIe board in the $150-$200 range if possible.

(2) On my P4 2.533GHz I have 1GB of DDR400 Ram (2x512MB). I set my RAM at 355MHz I believe in the bios, and then OCed the FSB so the RAM was at 400MHz (well, 200MHz in reality but you get the point). This put my CPU at 2.85GHz and FSB at 600MHz (150MHz). Can the same thing be done with most AMD 939 motherboards? Spending a lot of extra money on the RAM is not really an option, but since the 3200+ overclocks so well it would be worth the attempt, especially if the RAM can be set at a lower speed and then OCed. Since it seems a lot of people hit 2.5GHz or 2.6GHz on air withe the 90nm 3200+, I was thinking a 20% OC (the jump from 333 to 400) would probably be worth a try--especially if standard DDR400 dimms can be used. I never tried OCing a AMD system, so I wanted to check on the differences and abilities (especially considering it has the integrated memory controller). Thanks for answering this stupid question :)

And once again thanks for your time. For those who saw the other thread, my brother wants this system ASAP (I pointed out if he waited a month or two the X800XL would be out at ~$300 and PCI Express 939 boards would be more available and possibly Shuttles system they demoed at CES, but he is itching to get it now so I have to push on), so any leads would be helpful as I need to get this done for him ASAP. Thanks again :)

Ps- Also, Question #3: for those of you with CPUs that support "Cool and Quiet" how is this? My P4 noise drives me nuts. Are the AMD64 939 MB/CPUs with this feature pretty quiet when doing desk work?

check out the anandtech forums. there is a lot more information there. the selections are sparse right now - particularly for non-SLI boards.

"Don't question it!!!" - Err

The only non-SLI PCIe board for skt939 that I have found in stock anywhere is the Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 at ZipZoomFly ($170).

[edit]
Now its available at Newegg for $149 + shipping (of course, I just bought mine @ ZZF right before they become available)
