965 c2 4.0 ghz

I have an AMD Phenom II X4 965 with C-2 stepping. I'm a little new to the realm of overclocking. I want to overclock it to 4.0 GHz. Is it possible? I have a ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard, 4 Gb of DDR3 1600 MHz Patriot Gamer Ram and 750 Watt Antec Power Supply etc. To cool the processor I have a Corsair H50. So it runs cool. If you have any advice on what I should do please let me know. Thanks!

I have figured out some of the overclocking realms. I was able to get 4.0 GHz not totally stable on my own with 1.55V 20x200FSB. And with some extra stuff that I cannot remember.

1.55v is too much juice for 4Ghz....

You have to adjust the NB/SB volts as well. You cannot just leave all the other values on AUTO if you want a stable system.

Make sure you key in the correct timings and voltage for your ram as well...

I put in correct RAM settings. What voltages would you recommend specifically for 4.0GHz? And should I OC the HT link to 2200MHz and the NB or just leave those auto. And if so what voltages. And what are the correct settings for SB NB and HT link voltages.

I have my HT link at 2400 at the moment....

Not really sure what my other settings are at, I will get back to you tonight once I get home. I have a list of settings I can give you specifically for 4Ghz....

This is what works for me ATM and might not work for you, just giving you an example :

Your bios might not have all the values I have listed below.

Target CPU Frequency : 4Ghz

Ai Overclock Tuner : Manual

CPU Ratio : 20.00x

FSB Freq. : 200

PCI-E Freq. : 100

Dram Freq. : 1600 ( Note: These are my RAM settings, just FYI )......

CPU/NB Freq. : 2550Mhz

Ht Link : 2400 or 2600Mhz , depends...

Extreme OV : Disabled

CPU Load-line Calibration : Enabled

CPU voltage : 1.4250 or 1. 4375 or 1.4500v depends...

CPU NB voltage : 1.2000

CPU VDDA voltage : 2.50425

Dram voltage : 1.90800 (Again my RAM)

HT voltage : 1.20575

NB voltage : 1.25875

NB 1.8v : 1.80200

SB voltage : 1.20575

S5 1.2v : 1.20575

CPU S.S. : Disabled

PCI-E S.S. : Disabled

Taking in consideration that you have the correct RAM timings and voltage.......

Sorry I mean it is not running properly. I was just making step by step what was going on situations. My NB frequency only goes up in intervals of 200 MHz so ...2400 2600... My HT ling speed in my BIOS only goes to 2200 MHz, is this okay? I think my SB defaults to 1.35V.
Do you have the RB-C2 stepping? and What is CPU Load-line Calibration? I have advanced clock calibration, and unleashing mode.

Another thing. I just realized that my cpu fails prime 95 on stock (the workers just stop running after a minute or two).the cores are 1 and 2 what should I do???????

Yes 2200Mhz for the HT link is fine.

Give the SB at least 1.2v
I dont have the 965, i have the 550 unlocked to a quad meaning it was derived from the same CPU as the 955 and 965. As far as stepping goes, yes it is a C2 stepping. If you do not have CLIC then don't worry about it. My Bios has a few values that you do not have.

What is the cpu temp when prime fails? Did you get that info?

I have been testing for a while and came to the conclusion that my processor cannot and will not ever reach 4.0 GHz. However I got 3.8 stable and 2.6GHz NB and 2.6GHz HT-Link Stable along with better overclocked graphics. Should I have advanced clock calibration on along with unleashing mode or not?

That I have found to be a memory issue. Trying reducing the speed of your memory and try prime again. It worked for me. Im also having the same issue with 4 Ghz... I think its the 64 bit OS. Ill try 32 bit later today and tell y'all if that was the issue. K?

The thing is that I am already using a 32 bit OS but I am unsure. I'll try turning down the frequency of my RAM. :lol: But I am able to get to 3.8 stable with a 2.6 HT-Link and a 2.8 NB with RAM at full and that gives me a lot of power to run with, but thanks for the RAM suggestion. I'll try that and see if I can get my CPU to 4 and maybe have my RAM slower but keep the NB and HT-Link at those speeds. Also throw in a slight overclock on the GPU and I really did great with benchmarks!
