I was thinking about Voltmodding my 9800Pro, as now I've stuck a nice big fan on my VGA Silencer & vastly increased the airflow, so the cooling should be good enough  .

I remember seeing a link to an excellent 9800 Voltmod guide on here a while ago - anyone have any idea where? I've googled and found a few, but they're all quite brief... I remember reading this one and it was all very well put together.

I'll keep looking, but still.. (and yes I did search the forums, both OC GPU and Gfx cards, but I'm obviously not typing exactly enough  )

[EDIT]
Ah, I've found some better guides now... So it's no biggie.

I got the parts this morning, and have carried it out! A spectacularly neat-looking job, even if I do say so myself. I'll post some pics when I get the camera...

Core voltage is now 1.75V, with resistance of around ~9.6kOhm. That's a lot higher than I was expecting (was expecting around 1.5 - 1.6V from what I've read).. Maybe that's because I didn't tune the VR all the way up to 10K? Ah well, no biggie, 1.75V should be fine for now  I did a quick check and a few turns clockwise put the V up to 1.76, so it seems to be working fine.

As I haven't got the new mobo/CPU yet (hopefully get them tommorrow), I haven't yet seen it running windows, but I plugged it into a crappy board lying around here at work & I can see the POST screen, and fiddle around in the BIOS, so first impressions are good.

I'm hoping to get somewhere over 440Mhz on the core, but even stock XT speeds would be an improvement(I'm talking without artifacts here... I can do 420 on the core anyway, but heaps of snow everywhere, and 412 gives snow in 3dMark03 pixel shader tests, and a couple of games here 'n' there)

Looking forward to a bit of benching on the new system now 😎

Har har my 9800p ownz j0rs. Used to do 460/380 artifact free in most things, dunno anymore havn't checked recently. I know I can't in a lot of newer things. 440/370 should be artifact free though. However I leave my card at stock XT (as I'm using an XT BIOS) 99% of the time.

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too😉
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?

Tried the XT BIOS, was terrible. Got corruption in the text on bootup.

The XT BIOS doesn't really do much for performance, so I'll just go for clockspeed  .

I'll see what it can do. I might further improve the cooling if I think It'll help 😎

I always get snow @ 412Mhz in 3dMark, regardless of hong long it's been on - you sure it's a heat thing? I didn't notice it getting any better with the VGA silencer over the stock HSF.

I'll try 420Mhz @ ~1.75V and see what it's like

heh. Check my "A64?" thread to see how my luck's holding up  ...

Anyway, in case you were wondering, <A HREF="http://www.imagezilla.com/img.php?im=574450735_Big-Ass_Gfx_Card.jpg" target="_new">this</A> is my card. Currently artifact-free @ 450Mhz, ~1.8V.

<A HREF="http://www.imagezilla.com/img.php?im=912232223_Big-Ass_Gfx_Card_Side_view.jpg" target="_new">here's</A> another view.

They're a bit fuzzy, as my Camera's a bit crap, but you get the idea.

You can see a fuzzy voltmod on the second one  .

XT bios dosn't do much for performance? Check my thread in the 3D Chips OCing forum. Gained about 500 points in 3dmark 03 at the same clock speeds. Granted the jump isn't HUGE, a free 8 percent (approx. in my case [w/3dmark 03]) jump is pretty nice if you ask me. It's by no means negligible.

was that without artifacts though? I can't see how it would improve performance magically, unless it changes memory timings or something? well, it's a moot point, as when I tried it, it was an unqualified failure :frown: ... POST screen was barely readable, it was so corrupted. Fortunately for me, I had backed up the old BIOS so I just flashed back and all was fine. perhaps I should try a different BIOS next time?
