No.

For example Intel 100/200 series boards (LGA1151 socket) do not support Intel 8th and 9th gen cpus (LGA1151).
Also Intel 300 series boards (LGA1151) do not support Intel 6th and 7th gen cpus (LGA1151).

is this same for amd as well?
Not exactly, All MBs with AM4 socket have chipsets compatible with all AM4 Ryzen, Chipsets are a320, b350. ,x370, b450, x470, a520., b550 and x570. All they need is appropriate BIOS version and drivers. Those chipset series (300, 400 and 500) differ only by features to match advance in features that came with Ryzen generations like support for PCIe new versions but are all up and down compatible

Can you list model names?
What model board?
What model cpu?

If you have board and are looking for a compatible cpu, then you check cpu compatibility list at board manufacturer support site.
If you have cpu and are looking for a compatible board, then find board with same cpu socket and again check cpu compatibility list at board manufacturer support site.
