From scratch, the first drive letter assignment is G:, C: and D: are
known as removable devices (no other detail ...) and it was impossible
to reassign drive letters afterwards (Windows XP) even following
carefuly microsoft knowledge base instructions
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307844).

Worse, system hanged and I was obliged to reinstall from scratch again
!!!

Any idea ?

Are you by anychance trying to change the letter of your Boot drive, because
if you are you would need to use additional software to accomplish this. in
that case you would need to use a program such as drive copy (or similar).
Alternatively next time you re-install, make a driver disk for the SATA
controller first and use this when prompted during the installation.

I hope that helps, but if not maybe you could tell us exactly what you are
trying to do and why!

Hi Crimson,

I'd rather have boot drive letter to C: as for some programs G: is not
fully supported !!!

Needless to say, I had the SATA controller driver disk upon
installation.

The "drive copy" product you are talking about is the one from
powerquest ?

My experience is that for Windows XP to be installed
on your SATA drive recognized as C:
you have to disconnect all your IDE drives before
launching the installation.

You can then reconnect and your IDE drives will
be installed in Windows

Maybe I've missed something... but how do you start your windows
installation from CD when you disconnect your cd-drive first?
I don't have a SATA drive, but am planning to install one soon.
