Okay, Crashman was helping earlier on the PSU section of the community. I decided to bring it here to the motherboards and chipset section.
quick reference: a8n-sli, amd athlon 3200+ 90nm, 2xsamsung 160 satas going for raid 0, 2x512 kingmax 2.5 pc3200, NX6800 [pcie] by MSI -- motherboard is in the air, not accidentally grounded by anything -- motherboard has not been shorted out by my knowledge -- i have gotten displays a few times, even into the windows setup a couple times -- sometimes it works, sometimes not. here is the long conversation
IS ATX12V ATX 2.0? IT SEEMS LIKE IT!
I can't hardly figure this out! Is ATX12V another way of naming ATX 2.0? Does this mean every case I look at with an ATX12V PS actually has a 24-Pin ATX 2.0 Power Supply?
RAAAR!!!

bleh....I'm pretty sure I found that ATX12V is not necessarily ATX 2.0, just that it has the extra 2x2 12v connector. I know ATX 2.0 is new...but my Asus A8N-SLI has to have a 24 pin connector in it. Where can I find a bunch of ATX 2.0 cases or power supplies? I've been looking for about a couple hours all over the internet and local businesses.

Take a look at The Picture. See that 4-pin power header next to the AGP slot? See the 4-pin square header next to the keyboard/mouse ports?
These types of boards DO NOT NORMALLY "REQUIRE" A 24-PIN CONNECTOR. You can use a 20-pin connector and the extra 4-pin connector instead. The 20-pin connector DOES FIT the 24-pin socket, it's offset to one side, and DOES WORK with boards that are made to accept either type of power.

yeah, it does fit. I've been trying to work with this new system lying by my feet for a while. Maybe you could help me out....right now, ive got my 400w PS. It has a 20 pin male regular ATX connector out of it plugged into the motherboard, with 4 of those pins left open. Ive got the molex plugged in (by the pci-e slots), and ive got the 2x2 12V thing plugged in as well. Ive gotten this system to start up about 5 times now, but its very inconsistant. I cant seem to get it to start up now. I was having a little luck by clearing the CMOS and trying to restart...but now that is not working 🙁 . ***I HAVE HAD THIS MACHINE UP AND RUNNING FOR A TIME******* , the problem is, it seems when I shut it down, it has a real hard time getting back up. Sometimes it sends out a second long beep every few seconds, sometimes it doesn't. this is the weird part...why is it so random? --I HAVE NOT SHORTED OUT THE BOARD.

A little digging around says the second molex is for adding power to the PCIe bus for dual video cards, so the one next to the PCIe x16 slot doesn't need to be used for a single card. Also, my appologies for saying it was next to "the AGP" slot previously, force of habbit, it's a PCIe slot, AGP cards won't work.

What power supply are you using? Most cheap supplies are not providing stable voltage under that much load on the 12v line.

Hey, that DOES look like a good power supply! So, now you still have a problem!
What video card are you using?
Are you certain the back of the board isn't grounded to a spare standoff?
What RAM are you using?

I am using 2 512's of Kingmax pc3200 that were in my old system, never had a problem with em. I am also using this new MSI NX6800 , pci express of course. I don't have enough money for my other 6800 yet, tee-hee. I've gotten it to display several times.

I plugged that molex in next to the pci-e just to make sure, thats what was causing the beeping. You said that you thought you only needed to have that plugged in when running dual video cards, I think you are right.

WOW WTF?
I'm just a foolin with this machine some more, and it just started beeping again (same beep, about a half second-whole second beep repeating each 2.5-3 seconds). The problem is, I DO NOT HAVE THE MOLEX PLUGGED IN BY THE PCI-E SLOTS THIS TIME. This means that this beeping is something totally random, because it has happened with and without that molex in, and sometimes beeps and sometimes doesn't.
