I'm putting together a new computer, 1ghz thunderbird. Which mobo should i choose? Abit KT7A or Asus A7V133? I know both have VIA chipsets...but is one better than the other, and if so why? I'm leaning towards the abit one right now.

I personally just prefer the Asus. I've always had good luck with Asus boards.

But, besides personall preferance, which may be better? Does one have better driver support than the other? Does one perform better than the other? Does one have less problems than the other? It can go on and on...so does anyone have any facts besides just personall preferance?

Actually, if you look at the price/performance ratio, neither of those motherboards are what you're looking for. I am putting together a system right now, and debating the same thing. The EPOX 8KTA3 is a pretty nice board, supports raid, has a fan for the northbridge chip, 6 PCI 1 ISA 1 AGP, etc etc... that and it costs 20 less than asus, and 10 less than Abit... after the Epox I think Abit is the next best, for performance/cost...

Please, anyone feel free to correct me..

My own experience is with the AsusA7V, and once I got it running, I was pleased. However, note that with Asus, if you have a problem it's basically you on your own. Sure you can come to this board, but if you want service from them you're screwed. Their site is riddled with people complaining and I couldn't find a solution to my problem. It turned out I was overheating and needed a better fan/sink. Nonetheless, I've used both Abit and Asus boards, and the last one was the AsusA7V which is great once it's running.

I too am trying to make this decision. I am leaning over to asus right now but I am searching for a good mobo for a duron. I heard that abit is better for overclocking, is that true?

Yes the Abit seems to hit higher FSB then the Asus. The only bad thing about the Abit is the return rate for defective boards seems higher. I have an A7V and am very pleased but then again I have never tried the Abit. Has anyone out there tried both?

Yea! Abit's aren't lasting long for me. My Asus is at least still runnin. Haven't had a Abit last more than 7 months yet!

And I'm gettin away from both Asus and Abit. Both share PCI slot IRQ's too much - limits expansion. What good does it do to have 5 or 6 PCI slots when they're sharing with each other or something(ide controller, another PCI slot, AGP, or USB). Its tuff to get 4 stable PCI PnP devices in either.

Am likin my DFI more all the time! Gee, only 133, 140 & 150 FSB soft settings - but 4 dedicated PCI slots plus 1 shared
PCI/ISA. That gives ya 5 PCI or 4 PCI and an ISA. And its the only one I have thats stable at 150FSB. Boring but no problems!

Check out how PCI slots are shared before buyin any of em

A7V is fine for me. The new one should offer RAID support without the aid of a solder-sucker. The new 1005 bios should do the trick. I monkeyed around for quite a while before I finally switched to Windows ME. All my problems have ceased. I have heard good things about the A-Bit also. I think you have to expect shorter life-spans with over-clocking. Plenty of fans with a nice cooler. Good luck!
