I currently have a Ryzen 5 1600 and ASRock B450M Pro4 motherboard and I want to upgrade to Ryzen 5 5600x. As everybody knows, I'll need to update BIOS to do that. But ASRock says that the newest BIOS version is only compatible with 2nd Gen Ryzen or higher. So the question is, can I still safely update BIOS with my 1st Gen Ryzen 5 1600 and install 5600x?

I think your best bet would be to contact ASRock support to answer that - my guess is that as Ryzen 1000 and 2000 series are very similar it probably won't be an issue (I've noted several reviewers have used Ryzen 1000 series processors on X570 motherboards that do not officially support them with no problems).

Even if the board won't accept your 1600 after the update by guess is you will probably be ok as long as you have the 5600X on hand (worst case is it won't boot with the 1600 after the update, so you will need the new processor to get it up and running). I can't say that for sure though so as I say, if you don't want to risk it talk to ASRock support first.
