My Acer E1-571 won't startup. When I press the power button the power light comes on but there is no Acer splash screen, HDD light flashes constantly at approximately 2 flashes per second and the fan pulses at the same rate. This started a few weeks ago but at that time it would finally start (after 2 to 12 hours of flashing lights and pulsing fan) and boot into Windows 8.1 then proceed to run perfectly until shutdown. Next time I try to power up it repeats the problem. Lately it will not startup even after 2 days being left on. Is this a failing HDD or motherboard issue, any ideas?

sounds like the harddrive failed. you could try removing the hard drive and seeing if the results change, and if they do change then you know its the harddrive causing the issue. (I would expect it to request a boot device or give you the option to enter the bios)
Thanks for your comments. I tried to get into the bios on power up but no keys on the keyboard are active not f2 or f8 or del even if I try to press them almost simultaneously with the power key. The laptop is completely unresponsive apart from letting me power down by holding the power button for 3 seconds. I haven't done anything to this machine apart from use it and allowed Windows Updates, always had an antivirus and malware program running with no alerts. Unfortunately it's out of warranty so I will have to go to a service agents locally or send it to Acer where they can test it and repair at my cost. I just wondered if any one else may have had this trouble and found a simple solution.
