I have been using XP Pro for about a year now and recently had to replace my
Main Board. After changing the board, I decided to reinstall XP and have a
clean start. I expected to have to call MS in order to do this, but that
did not happen as XP installed without any problems. The HD was divided
into 3 partitions and all of them were formatted.

My question involves Activating XP. The last time I installed XP <about a
year ago>, it bugged me to activate and I expected the same thing this time.
This time it never asked to be activated. Does anyone know why XP would not
request to be activated? Should I go ahead and activate it without being
asked?

Was the computer connected to the Internet when you performed the
installation? Security considerations aside, because the automated
Internet Activation process is normally so quick and easy to do, you may
have activated without quite realizing it, just by quickly click "Yes,"
"OK," or "Continue" to accept the default options.

The OS will let you know, with frequent (several times a day)
reminders, if you do need to activate. To check for yourself, Start >
All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows.
Alternatively, Start > Run > "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A."
It will may well tell you that WinXP has already been activated. If
not, you'll be able to activate it.

Yes the pc was connected to cable while I was installing XP, but I was very
careful NOT to activate it during the installation process.

I have now checked my wife's pc and my pc for activation. Neither PC has
the option "Activate Windows" in System Tools. On my wife's pc when I go
Run and type in <actually pasted in> "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe
/A." <without the quotes>, it came back that Windows was activated. On my
pc with the new MB, nothing happens. It just goes about it's merry way.

I looked in the systems32 folder and msoobe.exe is there.

Does anyone have the number for MS for activation that I call to resolve
this? I sure don't to spend a week setting the pc up, just to have it crash
in a month.

Thank you

For your info Bruce here is another way to check activation or actually
activate it.
Go Start --> Run and type in "oobe/msoobe /a", then click OK.

If it is activated, do NOT activate again. This was the procedure MS had me
go thru when I called them.

BTW the first person I talked to at MS was really nasty and hung up on me.
I called back and next rep was very easy and only took a few minutes to get
things straightened out.

Thanks again
