I am setting up for a third monitor (old crt) and the active adapter I bough failed to work how I thought it would. I bought an active display port to dvi-d adapter and attached an dvi-d to vga at the end of. And had no luck with it. the PC was able to detect the monitor but no signal went into the monitor. My guess is that the activeness of the adapter muted once I atteched a secondary adapter for a VGA output which cancelled the activeness of the first adapter; but rather, an active dp to hdmi or an active dp to DVI-D will work as I read in a thread elsewhere.

All my ports work, I was able to confirm with a DVI-D to hdmi so so there is no trial for port checking even for the Display ports.

So now I will try the second DVI-D on my card (red non vga labeled) with an active adapter instead. Or is it that I need a DVI to VGA active adapter such as the links list right below, I don't now what needs to be active for the adapter to work for me as you will see with the items I am suggesting the title reference as the vga bing active. Or am I missreading?

Here are some other active adapters but with the activeness being at the DVI-D end:

Am I to go off on a bad buy again? Your suggestions are appreciated.

Not even an active adapter? To run two monitors but have three connected and be able to change between the monitors? I've read that an active adapter will work on the non labeled VGA DVI-D Dual Link port and also a non active DVI-D (Single, Dual I dont know)

As it turns out with my purchase, I bought a different DVI (DVI-A); So, my attachment (purchased adapters) might still work with an ACTIVE DP to DVI-D Dual Lin to, secondary adapter, DVI-D . On a different thread a comment read that a DVI-D male to VGA female would work and that it did not need to be active. But the link was not referred (dual link or single link). I have a non active DVI-D Dual link and it did not work as well so that leaves off the DVI-D Dual link...
DVI to VGA adapters will not work in a DVI-D port. Just get a straight DisplayPort to VGA adapter.

If my DP to DVI-D attemt completely fails I still have the Secondary DVI-D on my card I can use to the DVI-D adapter.

Any of these DP to VGA any good adapters any good?

the two at walmart are active, both being active at the VGA end. What adapter might I need, an active DP, VGA, non active.

What do say?
There are two types of DVI ports. The basic type is DVI-D, which carries only DVI signals. There is also a DVI-I port, which is a combo port that can output either DVI or VGA signals. DVI to VGA passive adapters only work in these combo ports.

If you have a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter, it only provides digital signals on the DVI side. There are no VGA signals for a DVI to VGA adapter to tap in to. An active DVI to VGA adapter might work but there is no reason to overcomplicate things, chaining adapters is just asking for trouble. Just use a DisplayPort to VGA adapter, they are only a few dollars. Any of them should work fine.

DVI to VGA adapters will not work in a DVI-D port. Just get a straight DisplayPort to VGA adapter.

I got the PPA Mini Displayport 1.1a compliant with intigrated triple 10-bit, 162 MHz video Dac for analog VGA signal output from Frys in-store products. I am not sure if the dac did the trick but now I am running three monitors. Not one monitor is the same an run without a problem. Adapter did need to be attached upon boot and presto! Great support @Glenwing.

Here is a link to the adapter that work for me.
