Honestly, charging for online play would be the WORST thing any company could do to a stand-alone game product at this point. DLC is really where they're going to rake in the their money from. The handlers for WoW have even stated they are considering moving away from monthly subscriptions and into the DLC model.

[citation][nom]hellwig[/nom]Well, you won't be required to pay anything beyond your XBox Live subscription fees, that is. Not sure why everyone keeps glossing over those.[/citation]
Screw Crapbox live, PC or PS3 for me.

The only problem I have with DLC is that in MMOs that use this model the only way to really compete is to pay. I prefer low monthly subscription fees with some DLC that does not buff a character above what normal users can achieve.

While they say this now i'm certain it will be done within a year from now. Maybe not the black ops title coming out, but soon. I've heard the console version of MW2's DLC did well sales wise, but never heard anything spectacular about the PC versions DLC. Last time i logged in less than 1% were playing that content, I for one won't pay for maps that are already on the CD but not unlocked.

Besides i coulda swore a month ago kotick compared the CoD to WoW in regards that they were considering a payment plan since multiplayer is free currently. I guess paying for DLC isnt exactly the same as a monthly fee, but if you put one out everymonth it sure seems like it.

From what I can tell, more people are playing COD4 (and to a lesser degree 5) than MW2.

I don't buy shooter games, so it doesn't matter to me...
but for the many people that DO care it would be a very bad move to charge a fee (of any kind) to play online.

games are already very expensive.

"Activision has no plans to charge gamers to play Call of Duty multiplayer"

Of course all future games will only be called 'Modern Warfare' so they won't actually be lying.

How long till Ryanair way of doing things takes over? "Play COD for £20" but you have to pay extra for every level after the first, extra game modes and for an extra copy if your overweight bringing the actual cost to £100+

Subscription fees for anything other than a MMO is unlikely.
I'm sure they would apply it to all other multiplayer genres
if they could but the average gamer simply would refuse to jump
on board and to top it off all the intelligent companies would
sit back and not jump on board thus increasing their sales while
decreasing competitors through competition.

I'm sure even MMO devs and publishers are at least mildly concerned that someone may someday make a very popular and quality MMORPG game that will be free to the gamers. A one time retail fee and in game ads would likely be a possibility to bringing this about.

too bad blizzard will never do that...oh wait.... what ever happened to activision-blizzard? they merged but still act like 2 completely separate companies.

[citation][nom]Arglebargle[/nom]Much like the promise of Larissa Riquelme to run naked through the streets of Paraguay[/citation]
She is still planning to do that but I highly doubt they will announce in advance when it will be, otherwise the streets of Asuncion will have the world's highest concentration of camcorders for the day...
Even with clothes on, phew!!! She is HOT, she reminds me of a parking ticket because she has "Fine" written all over her!

The only way i'd ever pay to play online is if they used the money to pay someone to sit and manually admin there servers to make sure nobody was hacking (anyone that plays or has played mw2 on pc can attest to what a disaster iwnet is), but that would more than likely be impossible and they are too tightwad to do it.

Seeing how the MW2 release played out, and how Bowling handled it, I am pretty sure Activision will release that subscription service just to get their hands on more money. Lately Activision has done nothing but low ball the consumer.

All future games by Activision will not have Modern Warfare as a title, because the rights are owned by Respawn. Activion's titles will be called Call Of Duty.

In the console world every game developer has reserved the right and ability to TURN OFF online multiplayer and other support at any time they choose. I'm sure it wouldn't be in their best interest to disable multiplayer for MW2 while it's as popular as it is, but they can.

Its all part of their elaborate plan to create such a rumor and 'assure' us that they'd 'never' charge us for multiplayer and come off looking good.
