I hope someone can help me with this puzzeling "simple" upgrade. I originally had 1 gig of ram in my new computer (Corsair DDR2-5400 2x512). I went to the same place and got the exact same brand and model of ram (2x512 again) and installed it. Everything booted fine, and it was slightly faster. Ran a couple of programs and the loading times were noticeably faster. However, when I tried to access the internet, it did not work. I ran ipconfig, released, renewed, and it would pull the IP adress from cox cable. I would try to ping certain sites, and it would not work. I fideled around with the modem... powering off and powering on, readjusted the network cable, etc. This seemed to work. I played some battlefield 2, then turned my computer off. I turned it back on and I had the same problem. I tried the same steps as above, but this time with no luck. What I don't get, is that it pulls an IP adress. I have a 2nd computer connected through the router, and I tried the internet at the same time the one I'm having problems with didnt work, and the 2nd computer worked fine. I tried switching cables, switching port's in the router, etc. Finally I removed the new ram, rebooted, tried to get on the internet, and it once again did not work. So I reset the cable modem, tried again and all was back to normal. Could the NIC on the motherboard be going out? Should I try a fresh install of Windows XP? Any suggestions or anyone else heard about these problems? Thank's for you responses.

Your NIC card could be going bad, have you tried to re-install the drivers for the card? You also might want to update your chipset drivers if the NIC card is part of the motherboard.

Yes the network card is part of the motherboard. I removed them last night and reinstalled them when I rebooted.

Sounds like a driver conflict.

You can check the driver settings of the integrated network adapter in:

[Control Panel] --> [System] --> Hardware Tab --> Device Manager.

Check to see if there are any warnings or complications. You may need to reinstall the network driver which comes with the motherboard utility disk.

If your having trouble connecting to the Internet try running the WinSockFix utility to repair your connection:

aslo you can pay attention when you boot(if you dont have a splash screan instead of the bios verbos..)you willsee all the devices with the IRQ's I found that sometimes(it was really common with win98) I had IRQ conflicts, well to many devices on the same IRQ. Sometyimes disabling on=-board serial 1/2 and Parrallel port did help!Thas of course if you dont use them.

For some reason the NIC, the sound card, the serial and parralel all seam to love IRQ 11.

That might not be the problem but its wortht he try!
