Adding more HDDs beyond the specified limit on motherboard

If a motherboard has only 6 native SATA II connections, is there any way to possibly connect more than 6 drives?

For instance, if I attach a RAID controller card and setup 4 additional drives in RAID 1... would I still need to plug each of those drives into the motherboard? Or is all the data transfered through the PCI slot?
