Adding more than maximum specified RAM

My motherboard is intel945gccr.Its specs say that the maximum total system memory is 2GB(DDR2).I have now 1.5GB of ram .Can i replace my 512mb with a 2gbDDR2 ram and total up my ram to 3GB which is more than motherboard specification? What will happen if i do ? Please help.

It may work, and it could be a problem. Some mobos can handle it and post 3GB, and some will not post the extra.

By no mean it will support more than 2GB RAM.
