Question Adding Ram

I have an HP laptop with 4GB of Ram, and it apparently has 2 slots. Am I able to add an additional 8GB memory to the second slot and just leave the 4GB there for a total of 12GB?

Is there a way of finding out the proper RAM speed so the new memory works? the HP product specs say DDR4-2666 Mhz, but other sites indicate it's 3200Mhz (and a youtube video showing how to upgrade indicated 3200Mhz).... or do I buy 3200Mhz and then the bios takes it down to 2666Mhz?

I don't do any gaming with this laptop.. its browser, word, excel, and 1080P webcam for work from home. Having multiple apps and the webcam going is using up all my RAM

Thanks.

Start here:

It should tell you what is compatible. You don't necessarily have to buy Crucial, but just as an indicator.

It says "X Well, this is embarrassing! No system match was found.

The HP Support Assistant (download file, similar to crucial's) indicates that my PC has 4GB of Samsung 3200 memory.
The product specs at HP's site indicates 4GB of DDR 4 2666Mhz
Windows 10 (under performance) indicates it has 4GB of DDR 4, 3200, using 1 slot of 2.

So, looks like 3200 is the majority (2 out of 3 doctors recommend), so adding in an 8GB of DDR 4 at 3200 should probably work, for a total of 12GB? Will 12 work, or do I need to go full 16 and buy one 16GB stick or two 8GB sticks?

Here's what crucial says about your mobo.

So it looks like you can add a 8GB stick @ 3200.

Just wanted to close this thread out and say Thanks. I just installed one 16GB stick @3200 into my laptop, and it's definitely loading faster/snappier, and I'm sure it'll do better as I have several apps open.

Thanks for the help!
