ADOM on Windows 3.1?

hi.

I'm fixing an old 66MHz 486 with 8MB RAM/340MB HDD - it has DOS
(actually, DR-DOS) + Windows 3.1, and would like to ask:

- Can I use the DOS version of ADOM under Windows 3.1? Will ADOM suffer
any slowdown because of this?

(to some groups: Yes, I use Windows and MS Office. So what?)

Yes and yes. You might need to make a PIF in order to run it, though.

Why would you want to run it under Windows, anyway? On my old 486, it
was slow enough under DOS (laggy walking mostly and major lag in the
animated forest). It doesn't take that long to exit Windows 3.1(1), and
the improvement is great enough that you'll probably want to.

Yes, but as Pat Kelly asked, why do so? Since Windows 3.1 requires
DOS, just run it from DOS. Also, you would be well advised to use an
older version of ADOM, like g8 or g10. Processor requirements went up
considerably as the game progressed.

Of course.

It should work, and it probably will show some slowdown, but no more than
running any DOS program on any version of Windows.Win 3.1/3.1.1 is actually
probably better for that because it hasn't gone 32-bit yet, and can invoke
command.com directly instead of having to emulate a DOS environment first.

(Incidentally, how did you get Win 3.x to run on DR-DOS? Versions of Windows
after 2.x had a special check in them that specifically identifies
non-Microsoft versions of DOS and created a false failure.)

It worked for me, just a plain DR-DOS 7.03 install, with 4DOS as shell.

Strange... I had an old 486 DX2/66 with 8 megs RAM and 400 MB HDD and
ADOM did run fine up until the later 2-digit gammas. The only times I
noticed heavy slowdowns were during saving games... But then again, I
rarely made it past Dwarftown back then 🙂

Hmm... Digital Research must have figured out howto mask it when they took it
over from Novell. I know it was still needed for Novell DOS 6. FreeDOS has
problems with it too, but considering that they're still in pre-release status,
I suppose that's not much of a surprise.

FreeDOS is made to be compatible with MS-DOS 3.3... and adding Windows
support would be a rather complex task to do.
