hey , im looking for a decent cpu without buying a new computer. My socket is LGA 775 and currently have a intel pentium duel core 2.8ghz.

Need the motherboard mode, some oldest 775 motherboards only support 65mn chips Presler, Smithfield, Prescott, Conroe and Ceder Mill families, while the last generation 775 motherboards support Q and E series.

I would not invest much on a mobo that is at least two generations old.
When you compare what you can get with the cheapest sandy bridge, it is not worth doing.
A pentium d 2.8 has a passmark # of 742. A $80 intel G620 is 2526 and it goes up from there. That is about the level of a E8600 which sells used on e-bay for $150.

If you must, then run CPU-Z to get your motherboard model, revision and bios level.
Go to the manufacturer's web site, and find the list of cpu's supported for that motherboard.

Q9650 is not the best CPU for LGA 775, that is the qx9770, however either is a waste of money for an outdated socket

from a Pentium dualcore 2.8ghz to any Core2 Extreme qx9- - - is already a big upgrade, you can see the difference even if core2 quads are not the latest today because it has 4 cores than your pentium d 2 cores, and is a newer cpu models to that pentium dualcores. if you can spend much go for the Core2 Extreme QX9770 or Extreme QX9650, if your on a tight budget then you can get the Core2 Quads 9650, 9550, 9500.
