I'm building a pc and was wandering whether it was a good idea to invest in a mobo with an am3 socket and get an fx 8350 or whether I should go for something else. (I don't want to upgrade my pc for another 2 years and preferably wouldn't want to upgrade my mobo when I do upgrade in 2 years or whenever) I'd also be getting a Radeon R9 270X.
Thanks

get an intel core i5 cpu although amd has more cores and higher frequencys its not better for gaming , the intel cpus get better performance per core and therefore overall the cpu is much better not to mention the fact that most games only take advantage of 4 cores max so the extra 4 cores are useless in gaming go for an i5 , i have the i5 2500 its such a beast you can get a more high end one eg i5 4670k

AM3+ is a dead socket, so no upgrade path there.

I'd go for an i5 if just gaming. You'll still have to upgrade your motherboard if you upgrade your processor in two years. The current LGA 1150 socket will only support Haswell and Broadwell processors, after Broadwell LGA 1150 will be discontinued for LGA 1151 and Skylake (which should arrive late next year).

So what's the best one for around £130?

Yeah i'm pretty much using my pc for gaming so i guess intel it is then :)

A 4440 or 4460. You'll also need a good board, which will run you around $100 (though it will depend on the chipset). H97 would be best since it's a locked processor, but you can sometimes find a good Z97 board for the same price as a quality H97 board.

I'd probably go for the 4440 since i'm kinda tight on money. Any suggestions for the motherboard?

I'm running the A10 and a radeon 6870 at the moment and i'm planning to upgrade to an R9 270X with most likely the cpu you suggested. And I like to play games like arma, battlefield, dayz and other stuff.

Also, which one out of these two?

Unless you have a Micro ATX case, the H97-Plus (top link).

You'll probably see a big improvement in Arma and DayZ. Both are single-threaded games and use a max of two cores, so you need all the single core processing power you can get, an area that AMD doesn't do the best.

I've also been reading up on some things and the i5 4760k and gtx 760 seem to be a good combination. Would you by any chance know whether you get much more out of the 760 than the R9 270x? I was just wondering because the prices are slightly different.

The 760 is faster in most cases, but in a few games it gets beat by the 270X (by a very small margin). It would depend on the price and features you need. For example, if you record the 760 would be better (even if priced higher) for Shadowplay.

What is your budget for the GPU?

The 4670K would only be worth the extra money if you want to overclock, there isn't much gaming performance difference between it and a 4440. It would also require a Z97 board to overclock, along with an aftermarket cooler.

I don't want to spend any more than £310 for the CPU and GPU together and preferably not more than £75 on the MB.
