Hello everybody! My name is Winly. I have been in the forum for a long time already, a few years! always reading and learning new stuff, computer is something that I really like and I pay close attention to it. I always wanted to build my own rig with quality parts and now its time. My old Sony vaio (a gift) with a Pentium 4 is really slow and there is no point of keeping upgrading because the CPU is a bottleneck. This is going to be my first build and i really would love all the help i can get from all of you guys here. Any tips, tutorial will be really appreciate. Thanks

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming with the best settings possible, multitasking, HD content (Blu ray movies, HD streaming) web surfing and do anything fast and efficient. Once in a while i will be using my Panasonic TC-P58VT25 Plasma as a monitor. Anything I do it have to be the best in other words.

Rule of thumb... the larger the case fans, the slower the RPM, the better the cooling and quieter. That being said, I would seriously take a look at this case down below. Those feet turn in, back or front so that it doesn't look like a duck. That board and cpu h/s will get you to a nice 4.6Ghz although anything past 4.4Ghz gains you about zero FPS and does nothing more than cause a shorter cpu life span. I don't see anything you do that requires s16GB of RAM or a 2600K. That psu down below is modular and will push dual 6970's or dual 570's.

Thank you for your answer. i will take a carefully look at your components later tonight, after work. i was aiming at a full tower case, more space for me to work. so anything past 4.6Ghz is not good? i wanted this build to last me around 5 years, so that's why i was going with the best my money can get right now. for the ram i wanted 16GB so i don't have to worry about that for a really long time, but do you think 8GB will be fine then? also i went with the i7 because i can get it almost at the same price as the i5 from a close friend. but you think the i5 will be OK, i wont notice any difference between the 2? and finally, the PSU i choose is not good, or you recommend yours better? if you think yours is a better way i will definitely look into yours and later im planning on getting a second video card, so which one you think is a better option? thanks

If I were you, I would go GTX570s not 6970s because I've had crossfire and it was hell on earth. BSOD everywhere all the time had to do insane hax to get it to work at all. 570s safer choice IMO.

I own the Asrock extreme4 gen3 and I can vouch for its top quality and great feature set.

If you really want to go with ~watercooling~ get an h100, will allow you to overclock further than the h80. You should be able to OC fine on air though, unless you plan on doing something ridiculous for benchmarking.

I would stay with the ASUS Z68 Deluxe MOBO because it was reviewed on OverclockersClub.com and was rated very very well.

Also, your budget would allow you to keep the i7 2600K (which is better in the long run as games get more intensive).

Keep your HD, and Blu-ray Drive. There is no need for a fan controller or thermal paste because the 800D has quiet fans and the h100 comes with thermal paste.

OK, you want something hot looking, you want something hot performing and you want it quiet if at all possible.

Case - When the Level 10 came out, it had it's issues....Thermaltake addresses all of them in their latest edition and this is the first time I can say I like the white color on a computer case. The reviewer here was thoroughly impressed and so was I. Do you need a $300 case, nope but it sure is nice and you have the budget for it. Other options would be Corsair Obsidian 800, HAF-X

CPU - For your stated usage, hyperthreading provides no real advantage. Unless you have something in mind that uses HT, I'd get the 2500k and save the $100.

Cooler - Not at all impressed by either the performance or the noise of the Corsair H series.... check out the reviews on benchmarkreviews.com. As you can see here, the Silver Arrow outperforms the H70 quite handily and it's whisper quiet also.

RAM - I See nothing on your app list that would benefit from 16GB of RAM. If you do pick up photo editing, video editing or something else that would, that app is also gonna benefit from fast RAM. Planning for that eventuality, get one set of fast RAM now and, if ya need it, can always add a second.

GFX - I'm not seeing the 6970 or 570 in the running at all at 1920 x 1200. At 2560 x 1600, I'd go 6970 2GB. But at your resolution, there's better options available within ya budget. Best performance with lowest cost per frame comes from the 900 Mhz GTX 560. These factory OC'd models have larger coolers and, at least in my experience, the Asus ones easily OC to 1000 MHz (7 outta 8 w/ no voltage tweak req'd).

Guru3D uses the following games in their test suite, COD-MW, Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, Far Cry 2, Metro 2033, Dawn of Discovery, Crysis Warhead. Total fps (summing fps in each game @ 1920 x 1200) for the various options in parenthesis (single card / SL or CF) are tabulated below along with their cost in dollars per frame single card - CF or SLI:

$ 360.00 6970 (526 fps/825 fps in CF) $ 0.68 per frame - $ 0.87 per frame in CF
$ 205.00 560 Ti - 900 Mhz (495 fps/862 fps in SLI) $ 0.41 per frame - $ 0.48 per frame in SLI

The twin 900 MHz 560's will give ya 40% more performance than a single 580. Twin 580's will boost that by 10% but at a whopping cost of $500 more than the twin 560's. Twin 570's give ya just 11 more fps for almost $200 more and OC'd (see overclockersclub link below) compared to the 560 (1017 in test), the 570's don't OC as well (785 in test). The 570 Frozr's provide a nice cooling package but it just doesn't have as much headroom as the 560 does. Compare the fps test in the 560 and 570 reviews on the overclockersclub site and you'll see that, when OC'd ti the max, the 560 narrowly outperforms the 570 at its max OC. Granted cuda been a bad sample in their test, but at a 56 % price increase for the $360 570 Frozr over the $230 560 Cu, you just don't have a hope of seeing the return on that investment)

HD - In the 1 TB category, ya can't go wrong with the WD Black, Seagate 7200.12 or Spinpoint F3. No overall winner and they trade wins across the range of tests in the THG link below. But ya budget allows for something better so I went with a whopping 3TB screamer which ya can read about in the benchmarkreviews link below:

SSD - For the SSD, there's a lot of good ones and the M4 is certainly one to be considered. However in the THG rankings for the 120/128 GB size, only 3 SSD's make Tier 3 ...... Mushkin Chronos Deluxe, OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS and the Patriot WildFire and the M4 are down at Tier 6.....according tot he table, that's a 33 % speed difference (10% compounded)

Just to clue you in on a few things...first off that Corsair 800D is a hot box. You get three p*ss poor 140mm fans for a case that large. If you don't have an over priced pseudo wannabee water cooling system in there your cpu is going to cook with dual vid cards, espeically cards that vent the heat inside the case. That case is the last case in the world I would recommend unless the person had hundreds of dollars to blow on a real water cooling set up. It's an over priced hot box.

3GB cards have zero to do with "graphic intense games". That extra VRAM is for a multiple monitor set up (high resolution)...as in 3+ monitors. Anything less than a tri monitor set up and that extra VRAM will actually hurt you with FPS due to latency. google it.

With the mobo...I can name a dozen boards off the top of my head that all got deservedly good reviews on the net including that Asus board the OP posted, and the Asrock board I posted. The difference is that Asrock gen3 board is set up for PCI-E 3.0 and Ivy Bridge...unlike that Asus board which is not set up for that. Big difference and a deal breaker there imo if you want an upgrade path later on.

CPU. Why get the 2600K now when games don't take advantage of the hyper threading? If and when they do, the new 22nm Ivy Bridg cpu's will be out next spring. That's when you upgrade to a hyper threaded cpu. A cpu that's going to o/c well over 5.0Ghz on air. So save the $100.

Ok 3GB of video memory may be overkill for todays games but he wants this rig to last years so 1-2 years from now the 3gbs will most likely help a lot. By the way a 1.5GB GTX 580's memory gets maxed out on metro on a 30in monitor at max settings, so he might he can get it for his money because he can afford it. But if you insist the MSI GTX 580 Lightning is the next best Graphics card.

I see your point on the case but the 800D is one of the best designed and easiest to work with cases on the market. Plus it fits the H100 with room to spare. and by an airflow point of view it has 3 140mm fans plus the airflow generated by the h100. The Thermaltake Level 10 GT is a great case but it would not fit the h100 without moving the 200mm fan.

The 2600k may not be necessary now but later it could be very useful when games come to support hyper threading

And about the ram 8gb may not be needed but if his budget supports it he might as well do it

Having two gtx 560's would be faster but he wouldn't have any room to upgrade later and only a 1gb memory buffer.

so after reading your comments i guess a GTX 580 1.5GB is a better option than a 6970. i was aiming at the 6970 because later i was going to try to crossfire.
also i thought the obsidian 800d was a great case, i was going to change all teh stock fans with new ones and i do love the looks of that case, but averybody says is not that great, any help? so do you think 8GB RAM is enough? i want to convert movies .mkv to mp4 fast and with no problems. so the cooler i choose is not good, then i will go with the silver arrow. help me build this litte monster please! too many good choices here im almost confused!

I've done research in this area, and below is what I come up with.

The 2600K will help a lot in video encoding, and games will probably eventually use the hyperthreading , and because your budget supports it get it. In a few years, most likely the LGA1155 socket will be obsolete. And Please don't get the 1.5GB GTX 580 as some of the games of today max its ram out on a 30in monitor @2560x1600, you want this rig to be future proof so get the MSI 3GB version as it is one the highest rated GTX 580s.

The Corsair 800D may not have the best airflow but it fits the Corsair H100 without moving a fan or fans. It is also is extremely easy to build in. I haven't built in it but you could look at the reviews. They speak for themselves. Also, you dont really need to change out the stock fans because they are pretty good fans. Corsair makes great stuff so I think they would be good.

The Corsair H80 is a great cooler but Don't go for the silver arrow. It is huge and would most likely be way more harder to install. It also would most likely cover a few of the ram slots. You could also get the Corsair H100 because it cools as good and better than the H80 but is quieter because you can turn the fans down farther and yet get the same cooling.

16GB of ram is not needed right now it is really pretty cheap at the moment, so you can buy it if you want and your budget supports it so whatever you do is fine.

Thank you. If I can't go with the 3Gb gtx 580 I will look at the 2gb 6970. Also I think a cooler like the corsair h800 or h100 will be great, I don't want to cover any ram slots in case something happens. Many people say the silver arrow and hype 212 are way better than the corsair h80 or h100. I will have to look into that. Once again thank you guys for all the wonderful help.

i'd recommend against gtx 580, it's $200 for 4 more fps compared to the 570. Plus, and oc'ed 570 often beats a stock 580.
and you would never need 3gb of vram for quite a while unless you do a 3 monitor setup, in which case you still only need 2gb.

thanks for your recommendations. im still reading all the great information here.

I see that AMD/ATI has something called Eyefinity for a 3 set up monitor, that looks really cool, maybe in the future i will jump there too, but do NVIDIA has something like that? since im going wit the GTX 580 and later on i will add another one.
also what monitor is a great to best one! at a good price, less than 400 dollars.

yes nvidia has nvidia surround i think it is called. you want more memory than 1.5gb's on your gpu. at that resolution the 1.5gb's will bottleneck your 580. either a 580 3gb or a 6970 2gb is the way to go if you just want to start out with one card then add another later

So wait, now I'm getting really confuse here. Many folks and even on the reviews here stated that the GTX 580 is the best single GPU, and it beat the HD6970. So please what will be a better choose then, because the GTX580 is a 100 dollars more.
Also I'm going to SLI or CrossFire, so which one will perform better when I get 2 of those? I don't know now, because some folks tell me get the GTX580 and now they are telling me 1.5GB is not enough? So I need a winner here. Help

the scaling is much better on amd cards than on nvidia cards. Also, with nvidia surround, you need multiple graphics cards unless you have a gtx 590. 2gb would probably be best for a 3 monitor setup, so i'd get a 6970. Plus, there isn't a huge difference between a 6970 and 580, but the 6970 would probably perform better at such high resolutions than a 580.

To be honest I just want a computer that will handle anything you throw at it. I have a 21inch monitor right now and a plasma 58" tv. So that's what I'm going to use to play my games once in a while. It will be like more blu ray and HD content than anything else. But I want something that will last me at least 5 years, because I don't know when I'm going to build another one. Maybe I will do it way sooner, but right now I'm not sure

so you dont want to go with a tri monitor setup that is why i recommended the 6970. check out my post before it shows the difference between a single screen and a tri monitor setup. if you are just playing at 1080p the 580 1.5gb card is the best single card for 1080p.
