AGP bus speed

I recently found out that my AGP bus is only running at AGP 2x. The motherboard can support 4x, and the videocard can go up to 8x... so what's the deal?

what chipset do you have in your motherboard? I had a problem where my Intel 815EP chipset would lock the AGP bus to 2X if I overclocked the board by more than 10%.

Thanks to Crashman (and others) I was able to locate a fix for it...maybe that is the same problem you are having???

If it is the same problem, let me know and I will post the link to the fix.

i use the Via chipset on my motherboard.

If I'm not mistaken there is also an issue with VIA chipsets...I don't use them so I'm not sure...

Can't u force it to be 4X in Bios?

How would I do that? I am not too familiar with graphic cards and the settings on them =/ ... I'll go check out BIOS settings for it, but leave a message.

You should be able to set it in the bios...although if the problem is anything like mine was, it doesn't matter what you set it to in the bios, it was locked at 2X until you applied the patch...

Most boards had BIOS that let you set it at 2x or 4x. Setting at 4x didn't always fix it, so programs like RivaTuner allow you to force 4x.

ok, i fixed it... thanks everyone, i just went into BIOS... but one more thing, my cpu temp is getting higher as time goes on (not rapidly), at the moment it fluxuates between 54C and 56C... should i get the Thermaltake Volcano 11+ to fix the problem? and if so, should i bother overclocking?

Well if your cpu isn't giving you stability issues i wouldnt worry about it.

If it is, get something better (and quieter).
There are lots of large and copperish heatsinks around on the market, many better than the volcano.
