Alienware computers, quality or crap?

As I was browsing through some sites I came upon Alienware computer systems. They seem to pack a descent punch with their systems and the interesting case design and internal components peaked my interest; here's the system I got my eye on:

Alienware Fulltower Case 420W PSU
Intel P4 3.0Ghz 800Mhz FSB HT
Intel D875PBZ P4 Mainboard
1GB Corsair XMS DDR SDRAM PC 3200(2x 256Mb)
120 GB Seagate Barracuda Serial ATA 7200rpm /w 8Mb cache
USB 2.0 128Mb Flash Drive (handy when Windows crashes)
Nvidia Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 256Mb 8x AGP
WinXP Home UK (English version)

The total price is 2073.88 Pounds or 2940.56 Euro or 3,324.01 US Dollar.

-> I'd order it in the UK and have it shipped to Belgium, however I am aware of the differences in the power cords, but that is no problem (have about 7 power cords here) BUT is the PSU also different or doesn't it mather?

Is this system worth it's price or is it simply too expensive for the system it only is? Please some advice here since I always used to puzzle my own PC together from various OEM dealers, so I have NO idea if this price is ok or not... (I want some service this time, tired of putting it all together myself, lol).

Is it a bad thing if there is smoke coming out of my case?

Search for alienware on your left. There's actually quite a bit about them on this forum.

They aren't a good buy.

For that much money you'll quickly find that you could buy more than one of those computers if you wish to build it yourself. Become familiar with what those parts cost individually. That's a major ripoff in my opinion.

Not sure about UK prices but for USA prices check out pricewatch.com and newegg.com

The case is the only reason why gamers look at alienware.
They are just like microsoft.

Mm, yeah I kinda noticed the huge prize afterwards... But still I would like to have a good looking and descent case, does anyone have some good advice for me on which case to get (preferably black with a door thingy, handy to hide my drives)...?

You can buy the alienware case. Besides the paintjob it's nothing special. I'm sure Alienware has changed their case in the last year and a half but when I bought my case it was the same one that they used.

Look at the Antec cases. They're awesome to work with.

Yeah, the Antec/Chieftec line is good. Get one and paint it in your favorite school/team colors and it'll be better than one of those overpriced Alienware cases.

16 days and counting.....

Just came across Sunbeam cases, now those things look sweet... but are they as effective as those Antec cases?

If you want a good case there is only one stop in town...Thermaltake. I have a Thermaltake Xaser III and it is easily the best case I have ever worked with. Newegg.com has (or had?) a special deal where you got the 420W PS for about $10 more than just the case (around $160). The one thing that I especailly like is that you can remove the Hardcano unit from the top and replace it with a Audigy Platinum drive. This way you get the best of both worlds: Easy access to the headphone port and it still covers the rest of the drives!

PHalanx01,
First of all there is an error in the memory listed, 2X256 is not 1gb, it's 512mb.

IMO you can come up with an answer to your questions by researching all of the components used in the custom built machine, be it Alienware, Falcon N.W. or Voodoo etc. I think they all build a good computer, it's just a question on what you have them put into it. What kind of company are they would be important to me. You can probably save 40% if you build it yourself. If you have someone build it for you you have two ways to go about it. 1) you can tell them exactly what to put into it ( some wont let you do this though), or you can have them build you one of their custom models. Alienware is not crap by any means. Falcon N.W. I think is on top of the pile in the store bought custom PC's, everything else comes after it as far as I'm concerned. But even at that you have to stay within their guide lines to some degree. For $3000. or so Falcon N.W. would get my nod, or you could build the same thing but better, for yourself for around $1800.

Recently CoolerMaster came out with a new model mid tower aluminum case called Praetorian, it comes in silver & black. IMO I think this is a well designed case and is right up there with Lian-LI, I like it better. This case has a filter, two 2.0 usb & 1 1394 port in the front, two 80mm front fans, and supposedly two more, one in the back and I think one on top. Someone posted that only 3 fans came with it. Personally if it came with just two fans I would go with this just because of it's design and size. The price range is between $119 & $139 dollars. This case sure looks like the one Falcon N.W. uses. But what you like and need is really your call, As you can see others are happy with what they have......Vista
