I mean really. They belittle console gamers just because they don't want to build their own rig, but instead just plug in a system and have it work, they also pretty much trash their own community, especially when say... a guy with an RX 480 gets called a my wise and beautiful friend because another guy owns a GTX 1060. I'm honestly convinced the facebook and redit page is run by 12 year olds. At least that's what it seems like. They literally attack their own kind left and right if another's standards in gaming and hardware are different from another persons. They also hate on apple and Nintendo the most, which those companies are pretty much the main reason we have games and home computers in the first place. I know this does not apply to everybody. There are some really smart people in the pc master race, its just to bad they are surrounded by pretentious a-holes who think they know everything about computers, which they don't. and neither do I, but still...

I started out with a Vic-20, that had the add on 5k of rom and was pre-floppy. Had to use a portable cassette player, took 15 minutes to load Space Invaders and if anyone bumped the table or the tape heads were dirty, you had to start all over. Any saved stuff was done by pushing record and play button at the same time then immediately hitting enter on the pc to activate the pre-typed command to save.
I can't blame reddit or YouTube for its vacuousness, it's really the fault of those kids parents. It's the Craftsmen mentality, or I should say lack thereof. Born in the late 60's early 70's, most of them had lackadaisical hippy parents themselves, so grew up lazy. Now they are parents, and still have that lazy attitude, just buy the kid...
The "Anyone who doesn't buy XYZ is a FOOL!" -type ranting-rampages have been ongoing for a couple decades...

Buy what works for you; review others' results and some unbiased Youtube reviews for at least *some* facts, do your own research.

But if you don't buy XXX, you're a tool! :) (JK!)

Hahaha, this thread is hilarious .....

Usually you see kids bragging about having the latest hardware and gadgets ... this thread is "old timers" bragging who started gaming with the crappiest and most cumbersome hardware.

Love it.

My first Linux came on 40 or so 3.5" floppies (the modern, "high capacity" type which could store an incredible 1.44MB each!!! 😀) and I remember it was great fun installing it.
Worked great, too.

Said the pc master race fanboy

Yep. My god how things have changed. When my mother started working in IT, their data center servers equated to about 1 TB of storage. That's the amount of storage I have in my gaming pc right now plus the 2 ssd's that I paired in a raid 0. Remember when windows 95 came out and you had to install it using 12 floppys, and it took FOREVER!
Kids today complain how slow their laptop is because it "Takes forever to boot up" even though it only takes like what? 10 seconds to boot? They will never know how hard some people use to have it, because in those days, a computer that could boot to your OS in less than 4 minutes was considered fast.

Craftsmanship, work ethic, drive are all foreign words to these kids now, very few have any sort of clue and grandparents horror stories of growing up on bread and drippings are laughable. They don't understand the word hardship. So they camp out and brag about what they own and cry poor-mouth and crap parents cuz all they own is sli 1080's not sli 1080ti's.
Honestly, it's sad. I'm pushing a 6 yr old system build from used parts off ebay that took almost 6 months to complete cuz the thought of possibly short-changing the grocery budget made me ill, and those idiots complain about not having the latest, greatest, most expensive equipment.

Some days I just wanna b****slap the taste right outta their mouths.

The only reason I hate consoles is due to there dumbed down games that usually affect PC games as well.... Small stages with constant loading and self regenerating health would be a good example .... Among many

I have to echo olaf's comment, as it really frosted my a$$ years back hearing all this crap from console gamers and a neophyte game programmer echoing the 'catch phrase/theme of the day' of all the reasons PCs and PC gaming were supposedly dying. I won't bother rehashing all the negativity and ill-informed stupidity around the arguments presented at the time.

My real complaints about the appearance of consoles was that for a number of the game companies the PC user became just an afterthought, many of which showed almost no customer loyalty, or even good basic logical design consideration (of building a quality product, starting first with the more capable systems, then just turning off features as needed to make the console ports instead of the other way around) just because they wanted to rake in profits, and screw the existing customer base.

Happily there were a number of companies that never blew off the PC base, MMO gaming continued to grow, and we now have a healthy growing market, where at least a good portion of the game companies seem to get it.
__________

Now on this fun history piece, I remember way back when playing a dungeon type game on an Apple IIe, and then maybe 2-3 years later playing Star Raiders, Defender, Asteroids, Missile Command, and Centipede on an Atari 400, and playing with doing some coding (at like 8-10) which unfortunately was saved or sometimes not onto a cassette tape drive. UGGGH!!!

Fast forward a handful of years and I remember the truly engaging game play exploring, killing beasts, farming gelatinous cubes, and trying to kill dragons in Moria v4/v5 on a VAX cluster (at the time these horribly scary creatures were little C's and d's moving around on screen)...and if your speed skill wore off, or you just happen to get your timing wrong the little d would be waiting when you came around the corner and you'd see the dreaded phrase...It breaths ####, It breaths #####...and then you would see your tombstone written up in monochrome glory, and freak out (because you were dead and would have to start all over again)!

A little less that a decade later, I remember moving to DOOM, Hexen, Diablo/Diablo II, Unreal Tournament and the Battlefield series starting with Battlefield 1942 (the original) on the PC. I remember going to multiplayer, and getting voice communication working were a big deal back then.

I personally don't like console gaming, but why worry what someone else thinks about what you game on if you enjoy it, on PC you can't trade your games in for different ones!

EXACTLY!!! There are benefits to playing console games as well. Like the fact that some people just want to plug in a game system and just have it work, not to spend hours building something they might not know how to do.

That's why Custom built and pre-built pc's are still in business, they do all the fun work for you so you can just plug-n-play pc....

Don't you find it strange that consoles added a keyboard and browser option, to make it more pc-like, and pc's added game controller emulators and DVR to make that more console-like...

And of course the hw has a lot in common these days.

Odd btw, I was going to upvote your post that was selected as the Solution to this thread (because it was an awesome and spot-on rant), but there are no voting buttons for it.

Ian.

I'm mainly a PC gamer, but I will be buying a PS4 Pro when Last of Us II comes out, and will play the other Sony exclusives as well. I have no issues with consoles, and for a while thought I was going to give up on PC building because it was just too expensive to keep chasing better graphics. But I ended up getting into playing Fallout games with mods (before you could do that on Xbox) and I got sucked back in. Also, I love the keyboard/mouse setup for most games, but do play with a controller and my Steam Link on the big TV in the living room for the Telltale & Tomb Raider games.

Course, I grew up on a 2600 and an Atari 1200XL (before that, used a TRS-80 Model III at the library for many many hours, and a Zenith running CP/M with dual 8" floppies before that at my childhood church's rectory) - so I kind of grew up with both a computer and a console.

I don't understand the master race wars. As most have said here, I think it's mostly kids staking out their tribal boundaries.

And I also agree that a previous poster is giving Apple and Nintendo way way too much credit.

Dreamcast one of the best consoles to have ever done it. Skies of Arcadia <3

Well I would posit that the postings you refer too probably are mostly posted by 12 year olds and just juvenile people in general. I've been building my own machines since the '80s and I don't have time to hate on anyone else and their choices. I'm too busy enjoying my game environment. Just sayin'.

Dude PCMR is a joke. There is no doubt that a PC is better than a console but the whole idea of starting a group using Naziism as a metaphor was just someone's idea of funny that has outlived its welcome. There are great communities of PC builders but there are also communities full of idiotic fanboys that need to disrespect each other to justify their own choices.

Ignore it and find good communities with the info you need to build what you want. AMD, Intel and NVidia all make good stuff...funnily enough that includes consoles....sometimes they price inappropriately and engage in shady business practices....pick what's best for you at any given time and budget.

And you think the Console/Apple/Linux/ and just about any other community of one sort or another dont have the same problems!!!!! What you are talking about is nothing more than an emergent property from something called humanity....You need to get a life if things like that actually bother you!

Bring back the cassette. That was fun waiting for games to load. Then trying again to get it to load. And again.
