AMD 5770 Card Very Noisy On Linux Mint

Just changed over from Win7 to Linux Mint 17 ( based on Ubuntu 14) with a dual boot.

When using Win7 my GPU is whisper quiet, but on Mint it is very noisy. I have loaded the AMD Linux driver set and that did not help much.

The weird thing is that the noise rises and falls even when I just wiggle my mouse.

Double weird is that the machine does not run hot - only around, 38C

But the sensors report that the fans are runing at around 27,000 rpm, which sounds insane to me.

I have a Dell 8300 desktop with the A04 Bios, but there nothing there which can help me.

Any ideas ?

Are you using the AMD proprietary driver instead of the OS driver

yes - I downloaded it from http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Linux+x86

I did so since under the OS driver the machine was also noisy.
