AMD 64 CPU, and motherboard????

Hi,
Just new, so sorry if i've posted this in the wrong section.

Im upgrading to a AMD 64 amd a new motherboard for it.

I was thinkin of getting a AMD64 3400+ (as thats the highest available retail in Australia) and a MSI K8T Neo motherboard (that THG recommended in one of thier news stories in December). http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=496

I have 3 GEIL PC3200 400MHz DDR.(http://www.geilusa.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=36)
Aswell as a ATI X800 Pro. I also have an IDE hard drive.

Does anybody recommend what i want to get? Or should i get something else? And would everything i have run alright together with the board and the CPU?
I definately want a AMD 64bit, but read that the new sockets are coming out. Should i wait for these? How long till they're available?

If anybody can help me out i would be greatful.

well if you can, id suggest you get the msi k8n neo platnium, its using the new nforce 3 250GB chipset and its a very nice platform.

Your existing parts should be fine. Another ditto for the Nforce 3-250 board. I just ordered one myself.

I've heard that i cannot put 3 512MB DDR on AMD 64 boards???
Has this been corrected? And do any of you know where i can order this board from that will send it to Australia???

I don't know if they will mail to Australia friend and I know that is, after all, your question; however you could check www.zipzoomfly.com , www.newegg.com ..also other vendors that seem to have good prices and get good ratings from their customers include accupc, monarch, hmcomputer, pcavailable, accupro, diymicro, securemart.com and others--you could check and see if they ship your way

I can't vouch personally for any of them except for my recent purchase with newegg. I am not a frequent consumer of anything (but food), myself. I just used the biz rate search on the Tom's hardware home page and looked at the ratings and prices to track some items over the past few months.
Anyway, you may have already done all this and still haven't found a company that will ship your way. Just thought I would post this in case though, buddy.

Most today's BIOS handle 3 sticks well. To be sure, check the MB manufacturer recommended RAM for the MB you want to buy.

Single-sided / double-sided??? They can't even run with "slack timing"???

By the way, do you really see the difference between 2x512 and 3x512 in ssytem performance? Do the extra 512Megs is worth in today's applications (except video/3d/photoshop)

Well, at least according to the MSI testing report, the K8N Neo Platinum can run 3X512 of certain modules. Planning on running 3 X 512 Crucial in there 'cuz its ultra-stable. 3 X 512 may be overkill now, but I think will be useful in 1-2 yrs.

I can just run 2x512MB DDR 3200 GeIL Sticks. They're just normal, hope they'll run 400MHz with the board...

Anyone heard of www.axiontech.com??? I cant be bothered waiting to find a Neo Platinum here in Aus. So i went there and had a look. Just waiting for an email back to see if they ship here and how much. The board is only $140.95 there.

I think they get good reviews I have seen their name come up by more knowledgible posters than I. I would also recommend you use the biz rate search feature on tom's hw home page (upper left corner) and check out their user reviews. Only drawback is sometimes a smaller company which may be a good company might not have that many reviews out yet. I looked for the green smiley faces and avoided the yellow and red frowns, he he. From my recollection, though I believe axion was a good one. Hope everything goes well for ya, bro.

Thanks for that. One question though. I dont understand much of the number stuff... I can see with GeIL that its yellow. But says it runs fine, just a wrong SPD or something.

It means that the board did not recognize the memory by it's identifier, but setting the timings manually the sticks ran with no errors. I always set my timings anyway, so that is not an issue to me.

Everything's changed since December, the K8T is now a dated board. I'd suggest the K8N Neo, which is highly rated by both Tom's and Anandtech.
