May be a silly question to ask but will it be worth it to pay the extra 100AUD for a 9800 or will the 7800 do more than enough for current and upcoming games?

Obviously the 9000 series is more modern but is it beneficial? Looked around and both seem to be doing really well. Since I want to built a rig from scratch, depending on the CPU, I would need obviously the right motherboard that can support the chip I may get in the end.

Thanks.

Both are really good for gaming, 9800x3d is a little better though.

If that 100 bucks gets you a better gpu for your build then get the 7800x3d and the better gpu, you’ll have better gaming performance overall.

If that 100 bucks doesn’t really matter to you get the 9800x3d it will make your build last longer before you need to upgrade again.

Both cpus should work on any recent AM5 motherboard so no worries there.

The 9800X3D has the advantage of having the extra-cache die below the CPU die, and that solves the problem the previous versions (including the 7800X3D) had with the cooling. AMD didn't have to underclock the 9800X3D to avoid overheating, which means that the chip also performs very well in production tasks. So if you have the extra 100$, going with the 9800X3D is worth it.
