amd a10 7700k overheating?

Hi, ive built this PC 2-3 years ago, and i have never really monitored temperatures or anything like this. Im using the a10 7700k APU and the stock cooler that has come with it. I downloaded speccy to see what my temps were, it was sitting at 60 C idle and when i was playing games at one point it was hitting 110 C. I thought it might have been speccy giving me wrong readings so i downloaded multiple tools to read the temps, all the same thing. cpu fan and heatsink are connected properly and are snug/tight. changed the cpu fan to max speed. and now it is also sitting infront of an open window to try to cool it down some more.currently idling between 40 and 50 C. what could be wrong for the APU to reach a whopping 110 C when gaming? (league of legends, fortnite)

AMD APUs can have a tendency to run pretty warm, but your's seems to be a little warmer than it should be for sure. Being that the computer is 2-3 years old, it leads me to think you might want to check two things in particular: The first is maybe it is time for some fresh thermal compound for your CPU, and the second is if you have cleaned the computer recently. My thought is that you may have dust built up in your heatsink inhibiting its ability to cool optimally. These may not be what is going on, but I always recommend to start at the easiest place and work up from there. I would clean and replace your thermal paste and give your heatsink a good blow out at least and see if trying those two things makes a difference. If not, we can troubleshoot from there, but best to rule out the easy first.

You need to download AMD Overdrive and check thermal margins.
The PC wouldn't be running if the CPU was actually running at 110c.

Agreed. 110 is too hot! The maximum temp for your chip by spec is 72.4C. Your mother board may allow for a higher limit prior to throttle, but that is dependent on the manufacturer...Either way, 110C is out of the park. There have been issues with programs being able to accurately read Kaveri temps that have been referenced by many on the forums, and Overdrive seems to be the recommended one to use for any real accuracy. Take note, however, that margins are different from temperatures, and will actually be showing you the number of degrees between your temp and the thermal limit. For example: If your temp is actually at 43C and your limit is 72C, it will show you 29C.

I still recommend a good cleaning and fresh paste if it has been a while, but yeah, try Overdrive as mentioned by ShadyHamster and see if that tells you anything less shocking.

Ill have to try the thermal paste, Ill update you tomorrow when i can get some. My PC is usually very clean, I clean it out atleast once a month. And i do think the temp readings are accurate, when i had accessed the BIOS and see the tempurature of my cpu there, it was the same when idling as in the programs

Kudos for keeping a tidy system!! Wow...60 to 110C is so hot! I would imagine you are experiencing a good deal of throttling at the least, but are you experiencing any thermal crashes, or does the system seem to run normally with the exception of the temps reading so high? I would be surprised if you were running that hot without experiencing any issues.

there has only been 1 time it shut down and re booted.This must have been about 2 weeks ago. The only thing im noticing is a drop in FPS when i play both fortnite and league. Theres a little bit of performance issue but its not major imo. My uncle had an AMD build and i remember trying to play league on it, it would shut down because the temps got high. I didnt even know reaching 100C is even possible without frying something lol

Edit: Im not sure if this would affect the cpus temperature but i have a really cheap case/psu combo from logisys. Also apparently I had the CPU fan plugged into the wrong place on the motherboard, for 2-3 years its been plugged into sys_fan1 lol woops, the fan was still working on that plug in. I just noticed it when i went into BIOS and it said my cpu fan was 0 RPM, i said "wait what?" I guess my first build wasnt perfect after all lol
