Well, sadly, AMD has 28% market share in HEDT, and even though they sell 70% of their CPUs as APUs, they are still roughly 24% of mainstream DTs, because OEM penetration is still relatively low compared to Intel.
So, would you want to try to push for more of the high volume low margin parts as a business, or, would you want to push the lesser volume higher margin parts (where you already have more market share to begin with)?

High volume low margin, worked for toyota. But there is more, AMD has been unable to justify a high margin on it's cpu's since the old fx. Intel has been able to do so, regardless of how they attained that margin. Bad ethics, fixed benchmarks, bribes, crippled software all could be a valid reason but the reality is this. APU's are driving amd's cpu division. Some may not like it but the console win further cemented AMD's short term roadmap until PD. Just my opinion
Actually, all that did was create quality control issues for Toyota, and the facade of their brand image is cracking and chipping away.
For example:
Toyota has had more recalls in the last 10 years, than any single automaker in the history of the auto industry all time (talking last 10 years versus all time totals of other makers). They are in the Guiness Book of World Records for it...Toyota have recalled more than 30 million cars worldwide in the last 10 years.
Still think it's working well for them...? I don't.
