So after doing a little research in to the finFET technology the general consensus seems to be it offers more control therefor better performance while being more energy efficient yet more expensive to produce.

Does anyone else feel that AMD simply lacked the talent and R&D to compete with Intel using the more conventional planar approach and felt they needed to jump into finFET to close the performance gap by the only means possible to them?

This move reminds me of HBM and how it has kept them competitive this generation when they otherwise would have lost ground.

Not really- one of Intel's main advantages is they developed FinFet several years ago (the now retired 22nm node). This is a case of AMD finally getting onto a level (ish) playing field again with Intel in terms of process for the first time in ages (both Intel and AMD will be building processors on 14nm fin fet, whereas currently AMD's FX cpu's are 32nm planar, and their most advanced gpu / apu's are 28nm planar which are up against Intel 14nm ff- Intel has 10nm FF in the works but it's delayed so there will at least be a while whilst they're both on the same process again).

Thanks for the info!

This has been found on wccf as well however I don't fully trust what all I read on wccf so (.) here is your grain of salt
http://wccftech.com/amd-x86-zen-processors-rumored-launch-q4-2016-yield-rates-affect-14nm-finfet-node/

zen was supposed to launch in 2017. amd promoted it ahead of k12 (http://www.anandtech.com/show/9232/amds-k12-arm-cpu-now-in-2017) to launch it in 2016. now we know from rumors that it'll be q4 2016.

When was a specific QTR mentioned for Zen release to begin with? The roadmap said 2016.

I believe it was always anticipated to be a Q3/Q4 release. There was speculation when Samsung sped up their 14nm FF line introduction that Zen could be released sooner but that was likely wishful thinking. The process still needed to be transferred to GF.

Both K12 and Zen were supposed to launch at 2016. Then AMD had to cancel projects (Skybridge) and delay others to 2017 (K12) due to lack of money.

The internal roadmaps always mentioned Q4 2016. I already posted the expected schedule for Zen.

I don't like when products are pushed to end of year releases (Q4 in particular), because that usually means if anything else happens along the road (and since it's GF, it most probably will), they'll have to push it to 2017 anyway.

I know you're correct, but it still kind of lurks in my head that they'll get late to the game yet again. On the other hand, Intel has had some delays as well, but not as GF has.

Timing timing! XD

Cheers!

mind giving link for this.

does anyone have news on new chipset features? will amd finally get DDR4? M.2? USB 3.1? SATA Express? I remember how excited I was for my 8150 with usb 3.0 and the great features I had on the crosshair V I bought. any links to AM4 stats?

No idea on the rest but AMDs naming scheme for their chipsets is pretty typical, AM2 was DDR2, AM3 was DDRT3 so by all accounts AM4 should be DDR4. The rest I would assume they would adopt, there is no way they can survive without it. They even will have to get Thunderbolt applied through USB Type-C to truly compete.

2015 AMD will launch project SkyBridge, a pair of pin-compatible ARM and x86 based SoCs.
seems to predate the cancellation of project skybridge. do you have anything recent and updated? if your claim is based upon outdated information...😗

here's the actual updated info for prit1989:
AMD’s 2016-2017 x86 Roadmap: Zen Is In, Skybridge Is Out
http://www.anandtech.com/show/9231/amds-20162017-x86-roadmap-zen-is-in
btw, "shipping" does not mean retail sales. and, none of the dates are set in stone.

@vogner: ddr4 is pretty much confirmed. so is a new socket and chipset (if there is a southbridge) for obvious reasons. amd will likely include a FCH (sb-ish) or go full SoC for cost-saving.

I doubt AMD is getting broken up...here is why:

Silver Lake is on a tech binge...namely the whole Dell going private event began this binge

Micheal Dell is closely associated with Silver Lake

Micheal Dell has Rory Read, John Byrne, and others (all former AMD execs responsible for the uptick in growth last year) now running top portions of Dell

Dell has suddenly started pushing lots of products with more and more AMD product in them...after a years long hiatus from having AMD in their products at all...?

Dell and AMD are both setup with HQ in Austin, TX

Micheal Dell has extremely deep (and heavily leveraged) pockets...and could potentially see an avenue to expand growth, and move Dell into the big boy arena across the board...(Dell could also, quite easily, leverage assets for credit and other things, plus has a solid footing in commercial servers too...)

What do I know though...?

I wrote about Skybridge cancellation just a pair of posts before yours

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2699237/amd-cpus-soc-rumors-speculations-temp-thread/page-9.html#16628102

The reason why I linked to outdated information was because someone asked me to post a link with information about AMD plans before Skybridge was canceled and K12 delayed to 2017. 😗

at which part of the post did he specifically ask for outdated info? i can clearly see that he wanted a source link to your claims, but nowhere about outdated information. just in case, don't do it next time when anyone asks for information. or if anyone does ask, mention it openly.

When he quoted only the first part of my post, ignored the second part of my post with updated information about cancellation (Skybridge) and delays (K12) and asked for a link to how both Zen and K12 were initially scheduled for 2016?

but the link you provided says nothing about zen in 2016. it says k12 in 2016. as far as i know no amd records said zen and k12 are coming in same year.

The second slide in the link shows both the new ARM core and the new x86 core for 2016. Then it was referred as new x86 core. Codename Zen was announced a bit latter by Rory Read. "As reported, both K12 and Zen are due in 2016"

http://wccftech.com/amds-generation-x86-zen-architecture-debut-2016-dense-server-market-top-priority/

I provided the detailed schedule for Zen here

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2699237/amd-cpus-soc-rumors-speculations-temp-thread/page-8.html#16611189

there seems to be a lot of back and forth here about how zen is coming out q4 or no its not it will be 2016... this has been about 2 pages now people. nothing new to update here. latest sources say q4 as the last 25 posts have said. zen will be q4 DONE. can we move this thread on?

@de5_Roy and @Jimmysmithy where do we have a confirmed ddr4 for apu/ cpu sockets and do we have any news on motherboard specs? will zen be a SoC? I hope not for cpu side as that would limit die area for power, and amd needs to catch up bad. my 8350 in struggling to be top end for anything other than encoding.

I would bet that the zen Greenland apu would be SoC however as they seem to be going that way. not that I will be buying another apu after I was rather unsatisfied with my kaveri apu.

What more proof do you need than AMDs actual naming scheme. AM1 came with DDR1, AM2 was DDR2 and AM3 is DDR3. Why would they not do DDR4 with AM4? If anything it would hinder them, especially in APUS that benefit from faster RAM speeds and DDR4 will support up to 3200MHz speeds which now is only doable on highly overclocked DDR3.

http://www.performancepsu.com/amd-updates-2016-roadmap-am4-ddr4-hbm-confirmed/

That also shows that Zen will be DDR4 while APUs will support both, much like Intel with their high end currently being DDR4 and their mainstream being DDR3/4. AMD considered the FX line their high end with their APUs being their mainstream.
