For my first build I'm really considering the AMD FX 4100. I like the 3.60 quad core for only 119.99 (tigerdirect)
My main use is going to be gaming.

So if the question is to be answered, "is it a good chip" the answer is a resounding no. It is okay if you are on a shoestring budget but nobody should recomend this chip. It is a watered down FX 8000 with only two of the modules or cores whatever AMD will like to call it. It has AMD's attempt at SMT which is rather gimmicky and runs wholistically slower than the i3 2000 series chips. It may be faster at highly threaded apps, but is a dog itself, overclocks poorly. Just stay away from this and any AMD FX processor if performance and quality is what you want.

It is the harsh reality that AMD are just not in the game and all but the purest fan will argue against that.

I wouldn't say it OCs poorly. The wattage used goes up to high, but a new stepping should fix that. I'm pretty sure I've seen the FX chips up to 4.5+GHz. Wouldn't call that poor.

If you do a lot of video converting it's a great chip for you. Much cheaper then the 6 and 8 core CPUs from Intel.

I would not deny that there are people that are expert Overclockers, for me I don't really do that other than to maybe show off, other than that my outlook on OC'ing is rather bleak, I liken it to tuning up a car engine 100+HP over stock, It will break sooner. OC'ing is reserved for secondary rigs not expensive primary rigs, nor should OC'ing be the primary point of buying a chip.

The entire reason for an unlocked multiplier is that it makes overclocking easier than messing with the base frequency.
Overclocking a cpu when.done correctly isnt torture on it. Overclocking.isnt reserved for secondary machines. I have my primary rig overclocked and.ready.to.game.
With all that said, the primary reason people buy the cpu with an unlocked multiplier is to overclock it....

Ok, Ok steady on their Maestro, I bow to your infinite skills of language dissection, I merely wanted to point out their are options, I know it's not carbon copy or operates on the same platform, but thanks for clearing that up for me or i'd never have known. Oh master stater of the bleeding obvious. I thought we had enough knowledge between us to shorten up, but maybe not.

It's quite clear from the responses here that my concerns are fully realized. I get the drift around here, It can run like crap as long as it's Intel and not AMD. With regard to integrated graphics I am referring to mainstream user experiences and that supporting us, "the enthusiast" ( although I am beginning to wonder) to get a better deal in software implementation, but I forgot that we are all beating our hairy chests about single threaded high IPC performance comparison and coming up with a few more FPS more than the next mug.

Following is a small quote from this months Inquirer

"Microsoft did feature in the statistics in a small way, gaining 1.5 per cent of tablet market share, but this could change when Windows 8 tablets start to arrive. SA said, "The upcoming release of Windows 8 this year cannot come quickly enough for Microsoft, so its hardware partners can start competing more effectively in the tablet space."

PC/Tablets are getting smaller/lighter/portable. This where the weight is as far as market is concerned. If we don't get smarter about how we do things, gaming will be confined to consoles and are largely already. The only way to reverse this trend is to get market weight back on the side of the PC, and Intel's current strategy won't cut it.

your right i got a fx 8120 (don't ask why i chose this over the i5 hopefully amd comes out with a great cpu sometime for am3+ or i will never buy a product from them agin!! SadFace.) it overclocks well amd overdrive says sometimes idle (stock cooling, stock speeds) at 15c-20c im not %100 sure if that's correct but anyways i overclocked it from 3.1GHz to 3.91GHz and ran cinebence and got a 5.39 and onoverclock a 5.06 so thats great and i did not touch the voltage im guessing if i changed it to 5.2GHz+ (i will need exellent air cooling or a H70 better if a H100) and when im overclocking 8 cores im sure to get a epic score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool'n'Quiet is a CPU speed throttling and power saving technology. It works by reducing the processor's clock rate and voltage when the processor is idle. The aim of this technology is to reduce overall power consumption and lower heat generation, allowing for slower cooling fan operation.

I would never say I will never buy X company products again. There can be cases where having an AMD machine makes sense. Even the 8120/8150. If you do a lot of video transcoding and don't have the $$$ for a hex core Intel then the 8120 makes sense. The Llano platform is great for net/notebooks. I do my best to not use blanket statements such as "X sucks, never buy them."

The biggest issue with BD is that it doesn't outperform the 2500 often enough to make it worth it as a general use computer. For that reason I would rather buy the cheaper 2500 over the 8150. Not everyone will see it that way however due to their particular use or blatant fanboyism.

Well for purposes of the OP post "is the FX 4100 a good CPU?"

It is an interesting chip with a lot of bells and whistles and looks like a real value for money treat on paper, the reality is that unless you are seriously cash strapped, the processor is really not that impressive for a entry level chip. It starts with the fallacy of calling itself a "Quad" which most will call it a dual with SMT. Its direct competitor the i3 is superior pretty much across the board, the only tangable upside is the unlocked multipliers however that is just irrelevent at this level, more a sales gimmick for a inferior product.

Avoid this processor completely, and if you really want a FX then only a 8000 series is worthwhile, kind of.

I'm sorry but do you BREATH intel? Amd is good in it's own merit, intel is bleeding edge and AMD is just 1 step behind intel really.

dude, that's the dumbest statement ever....
HD 6850 bottlenecked by i3-21xx..
you should be banned for saying such utter nonsense.
you need to study more before you start posting.
well... no the i3 cant stand graphics like that and skyrim, mw3, bf3 and cysis 2 the card is not the best but really the i3 would be used like a quad and should be overclocled for gaming it might not stand that much before extreme lag a duel core for newer games would be a epic failure
