Hi guys, got my system built finally. I have a dodgy RAM stick which may effect my ability to reach my goal today, but hopefully today I will manage to get the fx-4170 to 5Ghz 😀

Right currently its 6:16PM GMT and I have managed to get my fx-4170 to 4.7 Ghz with a slight bump in the voltage to 1.38v.

Here's le proof: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2339794

Seems stable although prime95 has only been running for about 20 minutes.

What voltage do you guys think I should go to? I was thinking no further than 1.45v, bearing in mind that I will be using this computer a lot and I don't really want to fry it, obviously as low as I can go the better.

Temps on full load at 4.7Ghz seem to be hovering between 52 and 53 degrees.

Will keep you guys posted 😀

Keep getting illegal sumout errors. Apparently might be down to the RAM, which would mean that the broken RAM stick is holding me back. Going to have to stop trying whilst I get it replaced :)

You can keep pushing, however you will hit a limit.
What is your cooling?

Corsair h60 got to 4.8Ghz and it was only maxing out about 55-57 degrees temp wise.

I do think it's the RAM though because I then started playing DIRT 3 with it still at 4.8Ghz and it handled it fine :)

If you get rounding errors in P95 you need to add voltage.

I know, the illegal sumout error isn't about the rounding error. with the illegal sumout error you get this error:
ERROR: ILLEGAL SUMOUT
Possible hardware failure, consult readme.txt file, restarting test.

and with the rounding error you get this:
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.

Hey guys i use the ASUS sabertooth 990fx motherboard and i went to BIOS and just took the multiplier to 21.5 and frequency to 220 and it adjusted the voltage automatically to 1.564V (i think) as i have seen in various forums it is considered to be high oltage for CPUs right ? So i threw it from The turbo EVO application to 1.375 and lowered the frequency to 4.4Ghz my q is should i lower the CPU/NB voltage (an option on EVo) or not ?

hi i have a fx4170 asrock motherboard 970 extreme what settings do i go into to get it up what do i increase with doing all these please let me know asap thanks

i have reached to 4.5Ghz on stock fan with max of temp 65c
and trying to cross it

Another caution, I was running my FX-4100 @ 5022MHz with VCore at 1.58v - It was P95 stable overnight (Water cooled max temp 48c) - but 2 days later I was gaming and the chip just died. So it required more voltage to reach 5GHz, but it couldn't maintain it. Just a word of caution.

These chips vary a lot, and some need huge amounts of voltage to clock high. My FX-4100 needed like 1.65v to stabilize 5GHz.

And of course:

1.55 is the absolute maximum voltage you want to take these chips. Anything above 1.45 is the danger zone.

I needed 1.38 volts to get to 4.6 ghz on my old chip, and 1.44 for 4.8. 1.488 allowed me to boot and run stress testing programs, but I would meet my thermal threshold of 61-62C. I used a Thermalright Archon SB-E X2.

I just overclocked to 4599Mhz! 😀 YEAH BABY! Not 4.6Ghz but still close enough! :) if I've done anything wrong please tell me? My memory frequency seems low but my computer is running fine. I did get around a 40% performance boost on my AMD FX-4170 CPU :)

Copy if you need to! :) might make a video tutorial after I've learnt more about overclocking.

Update: I've discovered that by adding mosfet heatsinks I will be able to clock even higher! 😀 might be doing it soon!

i just did an oc with amd overdrive on my cpu and selected 4.4ghz , prime95 sends temps to 60 Celsius load using 212 evo cooler and push pull config. 100% stable but cpu vcore is at 1.440v. Im wondering how you got to 4.7ghz at less voltage? did you use bios to overclock? should i go back into bios and overclock that way or should i download another program and use that to overclock and change the voltages through it. (what did you use?)
reason my temps are so high at only 4.4ghz is probably a combination of my fan having lots of dust inside, my room being warm and the cpu having such a high voltage set by amd overdrive.
