I agree with h2323. price point is a tipping point for many. If Kaveri is half the cost of i7-4702MQ but being compared to it, buyers would still buy Kaveri even if it didn't beat i7 in benchmarks. But like cleeve said, there is no price for Kaveri yet. so we'll see if this article is relevant when price is announced.

So is AM3+ pretty much dead? What it is on the horizon for desktop high performance CPU's from AMD? Is AMD only focusing on APU's now? I am still on AM3 with X4 955 and have not found enough justification to upgrade to another platform from AMD. Intel is way out of my price budget unfortunately.

Don't worry, Intel has not made it very far since Core i7 either. Right now I am waiting for a dual socket server board with DDR4 memory. The Socket G34 had Quad channel memory and an ASUS board on it had a full PCI-e x16 lane on it. I would really like something like that in my next system.

Fair point, but if history matters for something, then AMD won't target Intel's mobile i7s directly; they'll go to after the best selling laptops they have: i3s and i5s.

That's why I would believe you guys need to include one with a discrete nVidia (310m up to a 650m would be nice to see) and some i5s and i3s with them. You will be ahead of the game and when price comes you'll be able to look back and say "that value proposition sucks" or "damn, that's a very nice offer" right away.

Cheers!

I just bought an i7-4702MQ for $750. It crushes this new FX chip because it has a GTX 760M to go with it and full 1080p on a 17" screen for probably the same price as a laptop with this new Kaveri chip or not much more. Of course it uses more power but who gives a rat's ass? This is a gaming laptop, if you think you can play on batteries for more than an hour you are not too bright.

On the other hand, if we can buy these laptops for <$500 they might have a hit.

Congrats. My Athlon is faster than your i7 in HWBOT Prime.

Which Athlon? A Kabini?

I'm not an Intel Fan boy if that's what you're thinking, my desktop is an FX-8350 clocked to 4.6, my HTPC is an Athlon 2 X4. All I'm saying is that you can get a true gaming laptop from intel for a good price point ($750 in my case). The A10-5750 for $450 ish cant compete, the dual graphics version for $600 ish can't compete and the new FX-7600P for likely $650 on release can't compete. To compete, I would have to go to a build that adds an RX-270 or 280 and then it's over $1000 and the GPU portion of the APU is effectively useless. AMD has a major gap in mid range gaming laptops. Really, apart from the ultra cheap Kabinis they have a total gap in the laptop sector.

It's November and there still aren't any FX 7600 laptops on the market. The best Kaveri you can find today in a laptop is an FX7500, which is an ULV.

It's better to simply buy an A10 5750 with a dedicated 8750M currently.
