I'm looking to upgrade my GPU from a 750Ti. I was going to get a 970 but with budget constraints I'm looking at an R9 290. My buddy asked me if that was compatible with my motherboard, and I'm pretty sure but I'm also sort of new to computers. So, will an R9 290 work with an 1150 motherboard? Does it matter that it's AMD?

Solution
Yes AMD GPUs are compatible on Intel mobos. If the 750 ti worked fine then there should be no reason a R9 290 won't work. Also coming from a 750 ti you are likely going to need a new PSU too (550w minimum).

Thank you so much for the input! I did know I would need a new PSU. Is there a certain R9 290 of the bunches out there that would be best for video games?

This is the cheapest one available in the US right now:

The black edition just means it has unlocked voltage pretty much. $240 after $30 rebate. The new R9 380x is set to release on the 15th and will be in the $240-250 range, just an FYI.

Thank you for letting me know about the upcoming release. :) How does this look?
