Reason why socket is a valid question is that there already is a very noticeable variation in price per socket (i.e. socket 754 AMD64 is approx $140 OEM while socket 939 AMD64 is approx $160).

It is a good question. There are already sites on pricewatch selling the S754 3000+ for $14 cheaper than the newly announced price per thousand.

Amd's price is for 1k lots, before discount. Look at it as an MSRP.
Funny thing is, locally the 939 chips are cheaper, but the boards are more.
