AMD + Motherboard + combo that's cheap/fast/easy

Hi guys. I think the time has approached when I need to upgrade - seriously. I'm running an overclocked 300a Celeron. The computer freezes, resets, and generally is almost unusable at this point. But I need a computer that I don't have to leave the cover off all the time. I need a computer that I don't have to live in Alaska with the window open to use it. Unfortunately I'm no longer skilled in the area of putting together badass computers.

I was thinking of putting together an AMD Thunderbird 1 ghz system but I'm concerned about the heating issue. I have a CDRW, 2 harddrives, full PCI slots, so I think there's alot of heat.

What motherboard should I get with the AMD TBird 1 ghz (1.1ghz?) and what kind of cooling?

Can someone please give me a definite selection of components to buy to build a nice system which I desperately need now?

Oh yes, right now I have an ABIT BH6 motherboard with 192 mb of PC100 RAM (3 DIMMs). I also have: 2 network cards, 1 SCSI card, Voodoo3 3000 AGP, ATI All in Wonder 128 PCI, modem.

It's not that bad.

I have an AMD Thunderbird 1000 on an ABit KT7-RAID with 3 7200RPM HDD's, 3 CD-ROMs, Zip drive, RivaTNT2 Ultra video card, SB Live and Realtec Network card. My case ambient temp is 30-35 celcuis. When the computer is idle the processor is ~31 celcius and under load ~42 celcuis.

I decided to use a GlobalWin FOP38 CPU cooler. It can be loud for some people, but it doesn't bother me and it runs nice and cool.

I'm running an Abit KT7 (non-raid) Duron 700@1000 MHz, 3 7200rpm drives, 3D Labs Oxygen GVX1 with 2 CD Roms. I use the Global-Win FOP38 CPU cooler. Very loud and obnoxious, but my CPU NEVER gets above 87 degrees Farenheit....EVER!

Sad to say intel boards are easier to set up. thats why tom only test w/ intel processors. AMD is faster but intel system are easier to set up

I would stick to the bx chipset, upgrade the bios, get a PIII 600(100) oc the fsb to 133, then I would take out that 64mb stick and put in a 128mb micron 133 cas2.(you can mix 100 with 133)

But, if you want to go the via/amd way well good luck!

make sure you have a case of bawls in the fridge.

Since you're concerned about heat, get yourself a nice roomy case like the Antec SX830 and set it up w/2 fans in front, 2 in back.

I'm currently using the ABIT KT7 RAID motherboard, which I would recommend to you. It has an ISA slot so you can bring over your modem if you'd like (I'm assuming it's ISA). Also the ABIT's got an onboard RAID controller, letting you setup those 2 HDD's with RAID without blowing a PCI slot on a separate controller card.

I'VE GOT A KT7-RAID,1.1GHZ ATHLON,512MEG133 RAM, VISIONTEK GEFORCE2 GTS 64MEG DDR AGP BOARD, AND I CAN'T GET THE CARD TO BE RECOGNIZED OR GET PAST A DRIVER INSTALL. OH YEA, 2-30.7 GB IBM HD'S IN A STRIPED RAID CONFIG. WHAT PCI SLOT IS YOUR SB LIVE CARD IN AND WHAT OTHER PCI CARDS DO YOU HAVE INSTALLED. DID YOU DO ANYTHING SPECIAL IN THE BIOS FOR IT TO WORK? I don't have the same configuration but there are two simple things to start with on a KT7

- Put the sound card in slot 3 (counting from the AGP port over).

- In the BIOS under PnP Configurations find "Reset Configuration Data" and ENABLE it. This will store your hardware information so that Windows can find it.

- reboot

Windows should detect all your hardware.
