AMD NDAs the press again!

What I am seeing with AMD and with their marketing claims of scared to release specifics clock and performance tests because Intel is liable to glean technology from AMD demoing stbr product, and might quickly redesign Intel's well outlaid strategic plan and alter with AMD tech at last second, releasing a new better chip that is built of AMD observance of a demo showing?!?

WTF are they thinking we are??? That sounds like a shariwho or MMM comment more than an AMD statement...
It sure stinks of BS... and imo more likely reflects a mirror image of what AMD is doing due to Intel's release and future outlines, that internally AMD realized they had not counted on such a strong blowing and going from Intel, and Barc was intended to blow the doors off 4Ghz Hyper-threading tech, but C2D stunned them and quickly like a black project AMD is doing the risky quick redesign of their chips using concepts gleaned from Intel's successful C2D technology... maybe even they have C2D samples reverse engineering them to hopefully learn some ideas to implement and are risking it all on it working, and this takes delay and BS press statements to keep the cover on what is really going on behind closed doors...

It could be they produce a good chip, but in the rush, it may be clocked stock at within 5 or 10% of max overclock, which could mean it may perform close to intel, but if overclocked falls way short again...

Regardless how you see it, it is hard to see any positive aspects from the way AMD is conducting themselves.

I wish I had the confidence that you do. But after all the disappointing delays over the past few months I just can not feel that way anymore. Starting to wonder if I should have spent more money and built around an E4300 instead.

Well, knowing AMD's history of sensationalism, I think they are trying to build tension and releasing a big surprise --- or, perhaps they just can't get it to yield or perhaps the rumor mill is wrong about B0.... who knows, but considering who important this product is to their future financial health, I doubt we will see anything less the high quality.

Jack

I was reading somewhere that AMD is sitting a ton of K8 parts right now, due to weak demand + overcapacity in 1Q07 (and presumably 2Q07). Could it be that AMD is giving the market time to work off excess inventory before they glut the market with new product?

At their last quarterly report they were sitting on close to $1 billion in inventory (about 937 million).

The share loss is somewhat mitigated by this --- AMD stuffed the channel in Q4 and as a result could not burn off excess inventory in Q1. What this did was make their Q4 market share numbers look better than what they actually were and make Q1 look worse than they actually were. In the end, Intel still ended up with >80% market share, but the 6% swing in Q1 was not as dramatic as it appears.

However, I doubt AMD wants to continue suffering from negative cash flow and eroding ASPs just because they want to burn off inventory.... I don't think that would be in their best interest. Perhaps Twisted_Sister would comment...

Jack

Yes, that's a good point you make about the 1Q numbers looking worse than they really were. I just read this morning that the channel is now unstuffed, and that analysts are expecting fair volume from AMD moving forward, albiet at horrible margins.

Still, I find it hard to believe that AMD would hold off on releasing benchmarks for any of the official reasons that have been given. For instance, because they don't want to tip their hand to Intel, etc. I mean, that is transparent baloney. Intel's cards are already on the table what with Penryn being finsihed as far as the hardware is concerned.

I refuse to believe that K10 is fundamentally broken.

So what gives?

this is why they are scared to release any benches and we are stuck with NDA's
intel is bending them over

Nice video, pertaining to the 4x4 platform back in Sept of 2006. Everyone knows that the QFX/4x4 was a failure. Somehow I don't quite get the connection of that old video and how it explains what is happening with Barcelona, Agena, and Kuma, which come out during the next few months. Unless, you mean that the new CPUs are not better than last year's CPUs.

I lean to the fact that they are simply still working to tweak Barcey out to meet the perfomrance goals. This is not a bad thing --- any company who looks at a product and says, hey, let's get it right.... is doing better than releasing or showing garbage. The damange being done here is that AMD is slowly losing credibility as the anxiety of people like you and me push to ask this very question and speculate these very points 😉

Jack

Yes, fine, I like the idea that AMD might be tweaking the product so there are few glitches and it runs fantastic. But they've had so much time for tweaking and all we get are vague statements and promises of good performance. At some point, this resembles the old tale of "The Emperor's New Clothes". Is anything there, or is a all smoke and mirrors with no real substance behind the words? We assume something's there, but we don't know for sure.

Like Tacos, I think your last statement tells much of the real problem. AMD is loosing credibility, building anxiety, causing speculation, and I think its only succeeding in destroying itself. By the time the NDAs come off and the product gets finally revealed, no one may care. Worse, if after all this time it isn't all its claimed to be, it will be greeted by laughter and derission, scorned as the 4x4 was, and laid to rest in the graveyard of disasters. Then, all those who waited so faithfully will have whatever trust they had in AMD shattered and they will not bother paying attention to anything AMD says or does again.

AMD should be worried just noticed this:

I'd call that a concern, not a worry. As the article points out, Intel would have to push hard to get the processor out to journalists, etc. as quickly as possible (in 3Q). That doesn't mean Intel can do it, nor does it mean that even if Intel got a few processors out for review that the processor would be available for sale at that time. If anything, I think this just tells AMD that they have to keep moving, and move fast while they're at it.

:) I actually said 4 GHz on air for dual core, Quads may reach 3.7-3.8 not sure perhaps 4 GHz

You gotta watch taco, he is just a child and has the attention span of a squirrel running out in front of traffic
Was that necessary?

No. I think he might be going for a record of how few posts it takes to get banned.

He messes with Tacos, he messes with me.

I'll give him till 8:00 PM EST.

Hey, Ninja. Since my "Behave" thread got locked, why don't we look at forming a "Sacred Band of Thebes" (except for the gay part.) 😳

Your partner would be Tacos, mine would be Jack, and even though both of them are more than well equipped to fend off any insults, if any n00b dorks start pickin' on 'em we'll go rattle their cages!

This would not include Jack with Baron, as that one is far too much fun to interfere in!

Its not like that man. More like Tacos is my young, sometimes foolish but ultimately well meaning apprentice. Hyper? Yes, but he's like 15. When he's wrong I'll be the first to correct him. When does something exceedingly smart, I'll let him know that I'm proud of him and to keep it up. When someone just rags on him for the sake of ragging on him, or attacks him, I view that as an insult to me and as DaClan's head, will step in.

Wish I'd had a mentor like you when I was a young hotshot...

I posted this is another thread where greaper08 is causing a ruckous.

"Why is he still here? Greaper08, robx2, Robbie....Get out of the forums, all you've done is ridicule people, worse yet, you ridicule a forum staple, ape knows far and away more than you do about computer. Based on the way you talk and carry yourself in conversation, I peg you at less than 20, spoiled, ADD, and very aggressive, oh and alone with no friends. You do poorly in school with the exception of one subject, and for the most part, you lack confidence, which is why you feel it necessary to belittle others in order to artificially inflate your ego.

I'm not participating in this reply further. If you feel I’m WAAAY off, than you can spam my pm for all I care, just keep your crap out of the forums and try to make a friend by being mutually respective of his/her thoughts and actions. Honestly man, you're going to be a very lonely world if you keep this attitude up, hopefully you won't be 30+ before you heed my words. "

I think a permanent ban is in place. This guy offers nothing but ridicule and condescending rude remarks.

I think one of the reasons for the continued NDA is not to feed more fodder the naysayers. There has been so much negative talk over the last six months (much more so than negative news) that AMD just wants it to go away. Point being even really good benches and news would turn to bad after the naysayers started picking it apart.

nahh, they are playing the cards close to limit intels response capability. Actually its a decent move but the releases tell us more about how far they are taking this. Its basically an admittal that 65nm wont amount to much on the agena and stars cores. Theyd rather get busy on 45nm than attempt to scale on a dying node.

The late release kind of tells the story.

I think that Intel likely has a better and more updated understanding of K10's innards than Henri or Hector. You don't get to be a $100+ billion company without investing a few bucks in corporate espionage.
