Is that why they discontinued it?

Just a minor detail!

i love how amd has screwed themselves over with am2 and their socket lives. 939 lasted for what 2 years. What happened to the days where sockets lasted for 4 or 5 years? Remember socket 478 with intel? That thing lasted forever. And it still has some steam in its processors. Amd keeps changing its socket type basicly every year and isnt allowing people to keep their systems for very long because the upgrade paths suck. They release a socket and then have all the processors out at release... for the next 2 years nothing new. Might as well get the best because there wont be better models to upgrade with.

And Intel has never done this? Remember socket 423? How long did that one last?

I love how AMD decided to use an existing core that they know well to add DDR2 support. They know how the core should perform, so all thay had to do is tweak the memory controller to get the performance they needed. that bring them stable plateform to implement new technology and will allow seamless integration of the DDR2 tech. to new core developpement.. It is much more easy to actually do something when you know that you have data that you are sure about rather that to do guess on something all new.

It is much more better than having a new package to develop, and since DDR2 is only a transition from DDR to DDR2, then I don't see any problem with that.

If Conroe was not yet announced, then everything would be fine and AMD would rulez....

Every enthusiast want something better. This is called market evolution. If you think that AMD or Intel care about you or your idea, and everyone here in this forum, then stop dreaming. They are still be developping more product that will probably use different socket type. I don't mind about that... I'm happy. That means something better for me next time.

Enthusiast market is really not that big, compared to system integrator. It is a fact. A sad one maybe, but still one fact that make you, or me not as important as you think. And if you have to argue about Intel's or AMD's decision and being sure that your idea are way better, then just remember that those who actually has those idea and product are making way more money than you cheapass will do. They might do mistake, but thay are still making money. So I guess that thay are still making good moves..

AMD and Intel will have exiciting product over the next year. Intel finaly catching up on performance and AMD exploring new kind of computing technology that looks good (no, I'm not talking about 4x4..). AMD and Intel know how to make fast chip. They just wait the right time to announce them to avoid hurting their current sales (AMD side) or make sure that there will not be any shortage (Intel side) at launch time. OEM will have the first order completed BEFORE simple people like you and me actually have one of them. It is how it works.. we don't have the money Dell or HP have. Start your own company, sell millions of computer, and maybe you'll have a chance to be listened...

As far as bashing AMD for socket change, well, just like the other poster, you have t remember socket 423. That was one short lasted socket and thanks god, it has been cleared up fast.. And you see, people are still buying computer.. world did not crash.. there was some yelling at first, just like now, but they shut up fast enough..

Very nice reply, I don't understand the resistance to change with these people. Socket 939 has had a very nice run, in order to go faster the CPU needed another socket, and the platform has become stagnant.
The new platform and new manufacturing techniques will bring us faster systems and now I'll be happy to change, now it makes sense, not like going from 754 to 939 in which there was a small performance increase memory bandwidth wise. I could've gotten another 20 -30 FPS....maybe........that I would not have noticed, CPU speed I could achieve, so no valid reason.
Faster Dual Cores, Quad Cores, software written for it finally, the time for change IS now.
