AMD or Intel? Need help.

AMD OR INTEL?!

Hello, im Clinton. I'm building a 1000$ gaming PC, and i know pretty much what im going to buy already, i just cant decide if i should go with AMD or intel. I was either going with an i5 or an AMD. But I've never owned a computer with an AMD processor in my life. And i really know nothing about them.
I was wanting an i7 but i was told it wouldn't really do that much more for me than an i5.. (this is what people said) "unless you're doing rendering or something you wont need an i7" and yea, im never going to render anything.. just Gaming/Downloading/Internet browsing/maybe some photoshop.





If you can help me make a decision here, it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
This is the only thing really holding me back.

AMD set ups tend to run a little less money than Intel.

That being said if you built an AMD PC you would probably be able to get a better graphics card than for the same money with an Intel build.

And guys, please, I'm just trying to give him more info that might become important to him once he starts pricing things out.

I own both AMD and Intel PCs and they both perform as expected for what I do.

Alright, i was also wondering, whats the performance difference between an i5 and an AMD?

I really want to get the best quality and performance for my money. If the i5 is preferred, or if the i5 has more performance, (enough to really care about) and it costs a bit more, than id have no problem buying it. But at this point, i will go either way - AMD or intel.

AND.. which version of each would someone suggest to me?
remember (i will be gaming with my radeon 5770 graphics card, and i might later crossfire them)

PsychoSaysDie is showing you quad core CPUs. I agree with him. I use quad for gaming as I like FSX and it really likes extra cores!!!

But A lot of guys are perfectly happy with dualies. I prefer quads. IMO dual is okay but you were already pricing quads and they are nice.

I7 is a better gaming processor, don't get that confused. The i5 is enough to run any gpu setup to its max. Amd phenom ii 955 will also do this with a little oc and less money.

Why buy i5? Longetivity/lower power usage/massive oc headroom. I5 will perform better on stronger setups in the future, and i7 even furher. We can tell this by low resolution and scaling benchmarks.

I am buying everything from Newegg.

I now need to find a motherboard that will work with it.

Heh, usually we hear the opposite.

"Wha?? $200 for a mobo OMGsh!"

That's about how much I paid back when ix38 was hot and it will probably last me another couple years (unless 5870 crossfire doesn't tickle my fancy enough before that).

Just to give the OP a bit of info on eVGA motherboards... although I can't speak for this particular model I will say that my eVGA 3xSLI Classified Hydro has been the single best motherboard that I have ever owned. To give you some perspective as to what this entails....

I have owned well over 200 different motherboards and still own more than 50 of them. I spend insane amounts of money on new hardware just to try it out (hobby). And with all of that experience the eVGA board mentioned has been the best.

You would want to purchase your RAM in pairs (Dual Channel not the triple channel kits).

I personally have a preference for Corsair Dominator/XMS3 series RAM. That having been said I have heard great things from simple OCZ Gold DDR3 memory (PC-12800 or 1600MHz).

1333 or 1600MHz RAM would work.

The 1600MHz RAM gives you a more assured stability should you decide to overclock your CPU and RAM. It's worth purchasing over 1333MHz memory just because of the headroom that is left over.
