Ah I'm so lost! So many ups and downs on the both apparently. Intel from not many cores to AMD with overkill in cores.

I cant choose which 1 would suit me the best. First off is overclocking worth it and dangerous. If i did overclock.
Is there a big difference in gaming from a OC from 3.5 to 4.7 or so on. Whats diffrence from fx 6300-8350. Apparently they both can overclock like crazy,so wouldn't the fx 6300 OC to 4.3 or something run like a 8350. Cause I'm sure no games out there use 8 cores. maybe this coming generation. Im just so lost in which cpu to get.

If someone could give me some good ideas on which to buy AMD and intel

thanks

You would not believe how many times this question has been asked. 😛 So many times in fact that I have a draft written.

The difference between AMD and intel for gaming.
Firstly, you need to decide what your priorities are, and what you will use the PC for.
Things such as: light gaming, heavy gaming, basic work (e.g. MS Office), heavy work (e.g. video editing, 3d modeling).
For the most part in current games the biggest difference will be made by the selection of the GPU. Get a great GPU + worse CPU rather than worse GPU + great CPU.

The AMD FX CPU's have many cores, which are weaker.
intel i5's have less cores, which are stronger.

The intel's consequently have better performance per core. In older games, the intels perform much better as those games are optimised for good performance with only a few cores (single-threading).
In newer games, the AMD FX's really shine due to the introduction of games using more cores (multi-threading).

The difference comes in depending on what you want to use the PC for. If you're on a tight budget, save some money and go with the AMD and spend the extra money on a better GPU that will give you better performance than any CPU could.

i5: Good for older games (single-threaded), Good for newer games (multi-threaded), Good for general work, great all-round CPU and probably the best around for current games (may change in future).
AMD: Slightly worse for older games (single-threaded), Great for newer games (multi-threaded e.g. BF4, Crysis 3), Good for light/heavy work, extra cores are great for 3d modeling and video editing or rendering, great CPU whilst costing much less than the intel. Even though it's worse in older games it will run them perfectly well and smoothly.

Regardless, both will perform well.
For an i5, I would recommend an i5 3570k or a 4670k. Why? They are king for gaming performance at the moment and since they are the k version they are unlocked and can be overclocked in future for a performance boost.

For an AMD, I would recommend a FX 6300/8320/8350 [Do NOT go with a bulldozer CPU, only piledriver. List here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piledriver_(microarchitecture) <-- That should all be one link, not sure why it splits.]. Why? Great multi-threaded performance for newer games and heavy work, are just fine in older games (not overkill, can deliver smooth frame rates maxed with a good GPU), and are great for productivity with a tame pricetag.

In conclusion, budget gaming/work: AMD. Not on a budget gaming/work: i5. The i5 currently delivers better performance but don't get the impression that the AMD is lagging behind. They are great for gaming and work with a really great pricetag, just not currently up there with intel. In newer games though such as BF4 the AMD's have caught up in performance and in some cases deliver better performance than the intel's for much less money.
Either solution will game just fine with a nice GPU, focus mainly on that.

What people don't understand is that you can disable your secondary cores on the 8350/8320 and increase your IPC, this with a good overclock gives you incredible gaming performance for <$200.

However, i5s are always best as well when it comes to gaming.

I personally went with an 8350, just for the slight chance that Mantle catches on.

Basically it goes like this:

You can spend more than 200$ on CPU? Go Intel
You can only afford less than 200$ CPU? Go AMD

AMD are most powerful in their price range, but as soon as you can afford tossing more than 200$ on CPU alone - AMD hits the wall performance-wise and Intel takes over.

thanks for replys guys.. I'm going to go with AMD. Question. why does everybody say (lets say radeon 7950-7970) a fx 6300 will bottleneck it. when the 8350 is only like .5ghz higher.

Thats whats got me lost as well. will you see a big diffrence from a 3.5 ghz cpu from a 4.5 ghz cpu?

Im thinking about going with a fx 8320 cause its only 160$ Will there be much a diffrence from 6300 to 8320/8350

and also what motherboard will overclock well with a 6300 or 8320/8350. Whats a safe overclock speed ,will i see a diffrence and is it worth it.

Sorry for questions im just trying to straighten everything up. Im going to be building the pc for XMAS and id like to get my facts straight so i dont blow my money.. thanks

I doubt the 6300 would bottleneck that card.

The 8350 has 2 more cores (maybe physical/maybe not, fanboys don't get on my ass) than the 6300 so it has a little more room for extra performance rather than just the slightly higher clock speed. I think the 6300 has turbo to like 4.1 anyway.

Games will perform slightly better on the 8320/8350 BUT if you're on a budget get the 6300 and a better graphics card, as that will give you the best performance.

The 990 boards are good for overclocking and some have more features than the 970 boards, which tend not to be as good for OC'ing. The 'safe' overclock speed is entirely dependent on what temperatures you get when overclocking. You'll get above 0.5ghz overclock easy with an aftermarkert air cooler though.

How can i tell if a motherboard is overclock-able? I think im going to go with 8320 cause the 2 more cores and better reviews for only 30$ or so more.

but ye basically how would i see what motherboard would be best. Theres so many and they are like ahsfhf-shajd- joking but you know what i mean) is there anything specific i should be looking for to make my choice much easier

thanks

Good MB for overclocking that isn't going to break the bank:

Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3

Slightly cheaper, and a little less overclocking room:

Asus M5A97 R2.0
Gigabyte 970A-UD3

As I said, the 990FX boards like that first one you picked out are better for overclocking, as a general rule. They also have more features such as the possibility for crossfire/sli (dual gpu's) or more sata iii ports. Regardless, there are some 970 boards with good phase design that you should get decent overclocking performance out of such as the Gigabyte 970A-UD3.

Perfectly right on the overclocking front.
I'm planning to OC my 8320 to 4.4 - 4.5 but no higher on my 970 board.
The 990FX you linked has the ability for dual gpu's (sli/crossfire) since it has 2 16x PCI Express slots whereas the 970 only has one. However, in many games dual gpu's doesn't bring much benefit and in some it hinders performance, but this may change in future. Others see good benefit from it. Personally, I'm happy with a single card and for me the $60 difference between those 2 boards for slightly higher OC and the ability for dual gpu's isn't worth it. I'd get the 970 and a nice aftermarket cooler (Hyper 212 EVO). Even if you went with the 990FX you probably wouldn't get more than 4.7 Ghz on air cooling. So yeah, I'd say the 970 and an aftermarket cooler.

sweet.. sounds good. Appreciate youe help. Im good for now. im sure questions will come down the road later. This fourm has been so much help in choosing a good pc. Im going to go with the 8320 and the 1 motherboard. If there is anthing else to look for in gaming then please post. i know that gpu is more importand then cpu. Im just geting a god cpu for future so in 1 year i dont got to tear it down and replace 1 thing after another. Im going to be running a 7950 or a 7970. so i should be set for a few years.

Sounds great! Enjoy it man.

Thanks.. for everything
