AMD or NVIDIA?

I currently have a GTX660, regrettably, in my machine with my AMD FX-6350 CPU and I'm looking at getting a new graphics card. I was thinking about getting a GTX 980 but I've also been looking at the R9 390X.
Which would you prefer for me to get. My budget is £400 on these cards.

I think the 980 will perform better unless you have a need for the 8GB of VRAM on the 390x (aka 4K monitor). Cheapest GTX 980 and it's got good reviews https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-gtx980gaming4g £389.99

anything better than a gtx 960 or amd equivalent (r9 380) will be bottlenecked by your cpu.

exactly, but you do gain fps when buying a better graphics card as you can see. You can buy one of those high end gpu's but it won't reach it's full potential because the cpu is holding it back.
