I got about 60 others in storage of some make or other...ranging from AMD Athlons to Dual Core P4s..
from which i upgraded customers machines / replaced...I havent had time to do anything with them to be honest.

Over the years of being in business I have had the luck to own almost every AMD and Intel processor made.

I have had over 30 different video cards 10 different sound cards and 3 cable modem routers..

Im using the 9550 at the mo, I use this for business use, photo shop and gaming...

My E8400 is my data recovery, customer data storage machine...I have got some games on it which are old favs running under XP - Battlefield 1942 with Desert Combat mod is just the best.

My AMD is now in my daughters bedroom in a pink case ( yeah i know but she likes it ). My son has a p4 3.2Ghz packard bell laptopand my wife used a Gateway Dual core laptop...

But the difference between them is generally small for general use.

The speed difference over the 4800x2 was about 30% with the Intel.

I have owned a c2d 6200 E6700, a Q6600 from Intel which are all now sitting in customers machines.. Im waiting for a i Core 7 to have 8 native cores and then ill make the jump to the new platform. Windows 7 will be truly established by then and you never know we all might be suprised by it.. or shocked again like Vista..

But the speed of the hard disks does make or break a machine... Thats why i tend to get the ones with 32mb cache as they are faster...

I used to run a system in raid but getting data back is a bit more difficult when hard disks get a problem...

Remember kids hard disks need proper cooling too.. Get a aluminium case every one . worth every penny for keeping drivers cooler..

Cant wait to get a hard disk with 64mb of cache :) - we will proberly get those on sata 3 when it comes out... i wonder if 10,000 rpm will become mainstreme...

fud says there listed in the uk

You don't have to wait for February 9th to get yourself new quad or three-core Phenom IIs. The new CPUs are already listed and available for pre-orders and the shop even dares to say that it will have 10 of each in two to three days.

Three CPUs are listed: one quad-core branded Phenom II X4 810 that will work at 2.6GHz, and this 95W CPU will cost £159.69 inc VAT.

The runner up has three cores and it will end up branded as AMD Phenom II X3 710, and it too works at 2.6GHz and sells for £112.63 inc VAT.

The new Black Edition is called AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition Triple Core CPU and it works at 2.8GHz and you can hope for better overclock. This one sells for £114.31 ex VAT or £131.46 inc VAT.

You can see them here, at least until AMD doesn’t convince the store to take the prices down.

Never in my life have i known a man who wanted to be Modspanked..

I am now concerned on a number of levels...

You will notice that most improvements come only in benchmarks that benefit greatly from the added bandwidth, as are highlighted in green, mostly the graphics related benchmark and bandwidth throughput. Since the Phenom II X4 940 runs at 200MHz more than the 925, most of the compute intensive benchmarks sway for the AM2+ side.

The increase in throughput is of a healthy 15%, although the theoretical bandwidth has increased 25% from 1066 to 1333MHz, or from 17000MB/s (dual-channel), to 21333MB/s - not keen on efficiency then.

So it gians 3FPS in Doom 3 but looses 3FPS in Quake 3. Don't they use the same engine?

Anywho. I can probably tell you shy the memory bandwidth jumped by 25%. They are using DDR3 1333. Thats about 25% faster memory than DDR2 1066. So that makes sense.

Overall it looks just normal. Not much of a performance increase. Unless you count the 3DMark which would most likely be due to the faster memory.

They should ramp down 65nm completely. They have dual core 45nm Phenom's and that should suffice for the low end. Then they should ramp down Phenom's and ramp up Phenom II's.

That said, I'll be able to order a Phenom II 940 on February 6th.

I am so happy with Newegg. Finally sent that dead 3870x2 back to Newegg and they told me it's discontinued and to choose an equivalent item at an equivalent price or ask for a full refund. Since the card lasted for 11 months, that's a good deal.

Sent an e-mail last night requesting a Sapphire 4870x2 @ $449. It's the same price as the price I paid for the 3870x2 listed as the RMA amount. If they okay it then great. If I get a full refund, I'll just get a 4870 1 gig and pocket the difference.

I did note most of their new cards at Newegg only have 30 day limited warranties, but then manufacturer's warranties take over. All I need is for the replacement card to last until the next high end ATI card arrives. I guess they were burned by the bad resistors on the 3xxx series cards? Only a few 4870x2's closer to $500 have a standard one year warranty now.

Aren't they a subsidiary of ASUS? That should mean their mutant upgrade boards should be half way decent. Better than PC Chips, ECS and Magic Pro.

Hellboy, that PC should be better than a console of the equivalent generation from the same general time period.

Yeah but this was a pc up until recently then his video card failed..

Oh well such is life...

What i was trying to say current consoles are still better than "some" pc's

Yes you are correct in saying that Asrock are part of Asus.. But alas its like saying Linksys are part of Cisco..

 Why does ASUS do Asrock mobo's? Are they trying to get part of the upgrader market that they don't want associated with the Asrock name?

Just got an e-mail from Newegg. I'm getting the 4870x2 as a replacement. That makes me feel better about the 4850 arriving 6 months after I bought the 3870x2 at half the price. Even if a new card comes out in June that's equal and half the price, I'm still getting my money's worth.

Wonder how it will do with a Phenom II and an Acer 21.5" 1920 x 1080 monitor? Should I really get a Phenom II 940 if I'm not overclocking on this SB700 board or just save forty bucks and get the 920?

Nice deal yipsl! As to your question, the difference between them is small I'd imagine if not OCing. I only got the 940 because (a) I never had a 3GHz processor (and wanted one) and (b) I may OC later on. That will be a really nice system either way.

Infact I have got to say I have had more Asus boards go wrong than ASROCK.. Im sure the tech people in ASROCK do it for a laugh some times. they did a hybrid intel 478 / AMD socket 939 which plugged in to the motherboard via a daughterboard- ( what happend to the fatherboard ) running on a SIS chipset if i remember.. ASROCK have always done some weird and wonderfull things like PCI express and AGP sockets on the same motherboard...

Just like Volkswaggon and Skoda . do tell me you get skoda in the US of A.

Im glad your getting sorted of the 3870 fiasco... The 4870x2 is a good card, but lets hope your psu can handle it...

I saw a machine in the uk the other day with a 4870 512mb Core I 7 920 with 6gb of ram, a 500 gb hard disk, a MSI x58 motherboard fully loaded with a 500w powersupply... that is just not big enough.. at least a 600 watt one.. more if ya can afford it..

Guest which one will go pop first..

Its good to see you staying with the Phenom 2.. The Phenom 2 will do fine.. Yes its still someway behind the highest core2quads but the core 2 / quad package was just too good for its time..

but then again the 920 in current apps ( i core that is ) and many games do not warrant the extra cash thrown at it if you have already a C2/Q system...in my opinion just yet.. if your gonna buy a new machine sure but not from your current core system..

Ill wait until the native 8 core comes out , hope fully by then we will see some decent multi threaded games and apps come out.. imagine in vista - one core's job is to just piss you off with UAL every 10 minutes

As i have said before im not a fan boy but Intel is my processor of choice down to the fact that they are a lot less hassle in the end... Believe me when I say this... I need them to just work..and walk away.

anyway check this site out

http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

hope it helps for people who want to know how a game runs on their system before purchasing...

quite good actually - its is what vistas windows experience should have been like but hey ho..

Actually a better analogy would be Scion is a part of Toyota

I highly doubt it. I think Quake 3 was released in 1999 while Doom 3 didn't come around until 2004 so they should be using different engines although I believe both are OpenGL based like most Id games tend to be. Honestly though, if you're getting over 600 fps in the game why the heck are they even bothering to use it as a benchmark? Might as well use wolfenstein 3d.

This I cannot argue with. Dear god it reminds me of the older bland looks cases had. Thank god for powder coatings and nice blue colors.

Well I mean as in the base engine. Much like how HLs Gold Source was just a very modified Quake engine and Source itself is also just a very modified version of GoldSRC but has very little Quake code there. But still has it.

And I agree. I Was playing Duke Nukem 3D and got something like 3K-5K FPS. Not too sure how but man it was insane. Just glad the game had a frame limiter. Decent: Destination Staurn on the other hand did not.

just look at the mouse tho.. looks like a Commodore Amiga reject...

Oh the Commodore Amiga - the best computer ever.. I really miss my amiga too..

I must of had the Commodore bug..

Why hasnt someone done more with this... all we got now is Commodore pcs which are way too expensive..

What's a skoda, is that like one of the mutant fiats once produced in Eastern Europe? I don't drive and haven't kept up with cars all that much as I got older. If I did drive, I like the mutant look of the PT Cruiser. Don't know who makes it though or how reliable it would be.

My Antec Neo 650 is listed as supporting the 4870x2 at AMD's site, though I'm considering upgrading to a Corsair 750 and moving the Antec to my wife's to replace the Antec True Power 550.

I almost sent it out to MSI. I had it all boxed up and ready to go. I eventually tried it out one more time and still nothing. When looking up a motherboard I'd gotten from Newegg at the same time as the card, I realized it wasn't a 30 day return but a standard one year.

So, I gave a Newegg RMA a chance and they came through. I'd expected to get an equivalent card in performance, like a 4850 (that's why I canceled the 4850 I'd ordered last month as a replacement). I never dreamed they would replace the card at the same price I paid February 2007. I have no regrets over spending $2,000 or so there the past 3 years. I can't recommend Newegg more. Forget about Fry's and their ECS bundles!

I doubt I'd want to overclock with the SB700, so I might get the Phenom II 920 instead. If I want to try overclocking I'll just go AM3 next fall with the SB800 or whatever they name the south bridge.

I almost downloaded the Windows 7 beta, but I don't want ATI driver issues right now. I'm disappointed that there will be any 32 bit Windows 7. I'm debating whether to get an OEM Vista 64 next week with the Phenom II or just wait for Windows 7 64. When is Windows 7 coming out?

I'll check it out again when the 4870x2 arrives, but I've used it before. There's a difference between low and ultra high graphics settings so the question with any game is can your system run it at the resolution and settings you're comfortable with?

I'll do a couple of benchmarks with the triple cripple and then later when the Phenom II's in.

Windows Vista isn't that bad, but it's like the "Return of the Living Dead OS" or "The Millennium Edition That Would Not Die". It's Windows ME all over again, but then again, I didn't mind ME all that much.

Now that I'll have a high end card, I doubt that a die shrink will change things for me in June, so I'll wait till they come out with DX11 ATI cards and games before I decide to buy again. I think a Sapphire 4870x2 with a two year warranty should do me fine for the next two years. It's like I got free use of the 3870x2 for a year. For once, thanks for shoddy resistor manufacturing.

I was given a P4 630 and used it as a third PC for awhile. It's in the closet, I think it's 3 gigahertz but with Netburst it doesn't count for much.

Yes, I can't believe my good luck and Newegg's good business sense. When it was approved I promised them I'd return next Friday to spend $500 on a Phenom II, a new In-Win GD case for my wife's system (she has a barebones case, it's lousy) and some more storage. I'll just avoid Seagate this time around, but with our legacy drives, we need a couple of 1 terabytes.
