you
freak of nature! i literally ordered that board 20 minutes ago. i may be sorry but i dont think i will be. 😉

Going from 65 to 45nm may mean the main difference in top oc clocks, but even at both at 45nm, pens slightly outclock the i7s. Plus, they dont heat up, and thats just part of the native quads makeup, with everything on board 1 chip, like AMD has been doing for awhile. Having SMT effects all this, as well as a IMC structure. Really, whats amazing here is P2 doesnt get near as hot as i7, being so similar, tho, at same loads, we will have to see, once Denebs released, if at the same load, i7 gets hot or not
I think you don't realize how much power dissipation is due to forcing work through your cores at twice the normal rate.

Core Temp readings for my i7 (3.34 GHz core, 3.6 GHz uncore, stock HSF, PWM auto-regulated)

68-70 C, full load, HT on
62-64 C, full load, HT off
44-46 C, idle

The differences would be more dramatic with a constant fan speed.

Realize that a Q6600 @ 3.34 GHz, using a very similar HSF, with no option of HT, loads up at around 70C.

While I won't say that a PII can't beat my power consumption at 4 threads, I'm almost certain that if everyone is allowed to fine tune voltages (thereby turning off CnQ/Speedstep) and adjust clocks to a minimum performance requirement, the i7 would be much, much harder to beat, as even the Yorkfields lose to this "130w TDP" CPU.

It'll be an interesting fight between the two. Does anyone know if AMD's TDP is actually max or some average? Also worth considering, I don't know what the i7's northbridge wattage is, but if you use a 790GX with the PII I imagine the motherboard will draw less. I saw somewhere that through the 55nm northbridge and other optimizations on the 790GX, a decent bit of power is saved over other AMD chipsets (like 12W or so).

I do understand thats what happens, and comparitively, who knows, thus I quote myself

Read the last line of my quote, thats exactly what youre saying, Im just talking about P2, and at same loads, how the i7 may not be getting that hot, but like I said, well have to see

The layout is extremely good, the board looks very good, the heatsinks are good looking and not too big, its not that expensive, and has great reviews. I dont think youll be sorry. If I was using Nvidia instead of ATI I would buy it for a Phenom II.

its a hundred dollars cheaper than the one i currently have and has alot of nice features! i am pretty excited! hurry up egg!

i noticed that. early this year when i built my current system there were not alot of attractive AMD options. i see that has changed with the motherboards. prices are good as well.

EVGA has an AMD board as well, but its some micro-ATX chipset. (Think I already mentioned this? Oh well, lol) Would be nice if they released a 790GX board. They did a X58 board which is non-nvidia, so its not out of the realm of possibility. But then again they pander to Nvidia so much....you cant even tell that X58 board is an Intel chipset or supports crossfire, they tried their damndest to hide it.

Also interesting is this, a little further down in that thread:

air stable was ~3.6-3.8 not tested too much. but I just made some really good experiences with wprime no Q6600 in hwbot can beat Phenom II...5ghz+ 9650 is needed to beat 4580 deneb

My uncle (on my mom's side of the family) was a drinking buddy with Uncle Fester (Jackie Coogan) in the United States Army Air Force in World War 2.

oops - my bad. I forgot to include the link. :)

@ dattimr - I would like to hear your thoughts on this - if these results are roughly similar to yours, or whatever else?

It's mostly verbal, fairly simple, fairly consistent - not much for fancy grafx re results displayed - but an interesting comparison - I think it's a good set of benches that people can relate to.

sigh
.

Reading all these "findings" is what Id expected to see from i7, ealy on , before release, or end of nda. Not a total eval, just enough for performance in ocing, maybe a superpi etc, and I couldntr find them. When I asked why, it was as if Id said a dirty word in church, and everybody heard.
Im loving this. Its good to see. Its good to see everyones fun theyre having, and the expectations being tweaked just like the chips
