They should have bought it out when i7 came out to compete with. Bringing it out a year later is a little pointless but hey, you can't win em all.
 
I think AMD had to wait for a smaller procss node just like how Intels 6 core will be 32nm as well.

If they can push the IPC then its fine. But in the market its in it will have stiff competition from Core i7/i9 sinc i9 will be a LGA1366 drop in.
 


And what would the difference be, well besides socket maybe. Other than that its the same exact CPU core just like how Xeon is the same as Core i7.

Potentially very different cache look-ups. Also, doesn't Istanbul have another Hypertransport ring for socket to socket communications?


(or is that for quad socket procs only...)
 


Not sure. I would think for quad socket servers yes. But for dual it wont make a difference.

Thuban is a modified version of Istanbul for the desktop AM3 socket rumored to be called Phenom II X6, it's still a K10 45nm part. Bulldozer is an all new architecture which will be built using 32nm.
