I'm looking to upgrade my video card. Considering my situation where my GPU might have died I would like to get it repaired soon. I'm looking at my options I got $500 and my video card is a sapphire AMD Radeon 7950. In terms of space I have available here's the link to the case that i currently have.

I know I could probably wait for the 1070 but I would like to have an upgrade right now and I can save up for the 1070 when the new editions come out.

Solution
That is the exact 980 I have, it has high performance, some neat-o apps, lighting changes, and other things (really like to heat pipes, too). That case will fit that GPU just fine.
Quick and dirty, I'd look for a PSU in the 550W range (allows for plenty of margin) built by Seasonic (their own, XFX except TS; some Antec; EVGA GS), SuperFlower (EVGA B2, G2, or P2; Rosewill Capstone non-G, if you can find it; Kingwin Lazer), or Delta (some Antec).

yeah and nvidia claimed the 1080 would be faster than two gtx 980's in sli. we see how that turned out. secondly, show me some real-world, non-synthetic, non-leak benchmarks for the 480 and then we'll talk. you're quite aggressive, man. need to relax a bit and learn how to have a multi-way conversation with people.

Aggressive how? Nevermind, this is getting out of hand. The RX 480 is the best choice for him until he gets his hands on the 1070, he has time to save and has an upgraded power-supply. And what nVidia claims is none of my concern, but I will point out that the 1080 is faster than the Titan X :)

the rx 480 isnt out yet. not until the 29th of this month. im just confused how we're getting our hands on one of those before the 1070 that was released last week?

what nvidia claims isnt of your concern but what AMD claims is? because you just posted they claimed the 480 being around 970/980 in performance. is this because you're an AMD fan?

He's waiting for the other brands, not the founders edition :)
They have the benchmarks (you have me at real-world tests) and the release date is soon. And yes, I'm an AMD fan, I'm also a fan of nVidia? I'm not interested in the claims in this particular thread for nVidia because I'm not recommending the 1070/1080 as of right now. Like OP has stated, he's waiting for other brands.

If you want to continue this debate, please PM me, this thread is getting longer with our fussing over price/performance :)

i originally wanted to tell him to wait for the rx 480 and get that. but it seems as though its going to probably be quite a while til we can get our hands on that too (just like the 1070). was just confused with the timeline of what he's planning on doing is all. its probably going to be mid-august before you can get your hands on an rx 480 at best, seeing as how the hype train is going.

Alright, I can understand that. I'm sorry if I seemed like I was aggressive/rude, I had no intention of coming off that way. Have a good day/night, friend :)

That is a decent price for a 980 but I think you would be crazy to order one now that the 1070 is available. The custom models are starting to show up and if you check the major sites like Amazon every day you will be able to find one of them pretty soon.

I was able to order this Gigabyte G1 Gaming 1070 from Amazon earlier this morning before they sold out again.

I got it for $430 which is $15 less than you are considering paying for a 980 and the 1070 is significantly faster than what you are getting.

In the end, it's your money and you should do what you want with it. I absolutely would not buy a 980 right now though. The only exception would be if you can find a used model at a great price.
