Since I preferred PCs over Macs, I never was a Motorolla fanboy but they're the only real company that's made a CPU that competed with Intel for years on end without copying the same base architecture - have to admire that - even if you think an old Mac is poopy pants.

(Correct me if I'm wrong, its the only company I'm aware of that did this in the DT market)

The Power CPU is quite good but is not only a Motorola idea. Its a joint idea from IBM and Motorola. In fact the biggest reason why Apple switched to Intel was because motorola lost one of their biggest FABs in that massive Tsunami a few years back thus destroying most of their chip making capabilities.

But like IBM, they tend to do joint ventures these days rather than alone. HK/MG for AMD is being worked on by 11 total companies including AMD and IBM while Intel tends to do a lot of their stuff alone. Joint ventures are great but in the end no one really gets the IP its just shared.

Motorola does make the set top boxes for Verizons FiOS and they are pretty nice. They have a lot of untapped features such as a eSATA port and so on.

JJ actually helped me with aspect of this post and the posts I was doing over at AMDZone. It was a joint effort :)

AMD's Istanbul CPU isn't a native Hexa core? Are you sure?

Well bring him back also; he is needed. We have been overrun by people that need his expertise as of late.

Well, 'precisely' may not be quite right... It could be that he now has his own in-house n00b to deal with.

Well you might want to edit Wikipedia to start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_80386#The_i386SL_variant
The i386SL variant

The i386SL was introduced as a power efficient version for laptop computers. The processor offered several power management options (e.g. SMM), as well as different "sleep" modes to conserve battery power. It also contained support for an external cache of 16 to 64 kB. The extra functions and circuit implementation techniques caused this variant to have over 3 times as many transistors as the i386DX. The i386SL was first available at 20 MHz clock speed,[8] with the 25 MHz model later added

An Integrated Memory Controller could be found on both the Intel i386SL & i486SL processors: http://www.alasir.com/x86ref/

The low-power version of i386SX, with both cache and memory controllers integrated. Designed exclusively for notebooks and other portables. Intel's second attempt to produce an all-in-one chip since i80186.

About 1.8 million units were sold.

Intel i486SL

Intel's third attempt to produce an all-in-one chip; the core of i486DX + three controllers: memory, ISA and PI (Peripheral Interconnect bus). Like before, exclusively for notebooks and other portables. Of course, i486DX pin-incompatible.

It's mentioned by Intel in this article:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=1455
In an attempt to confirm or deny the rumor, I checked with Intel spokesperson Bill Kircos, who did neither when he said "I’m not saying Intel will or won’t go this route someday. History shows we’ve gone both ways. We integrated the memory controller in our CPUs as far back as 1990 (i386SL w/ Page Mode DRAM + SRAM + FLASH MC) and 1992 (i486SL w/ Fast Page mode 3.3v DRAM, x4, x8, x16). We do it now with our X-scale based products. And, we had it as part of a desktop PC chip project called Timna that we cancelled in the late 90s.

If you want a direct source there is always this *.pdf from Intel: http://download.intel.com/pressroom/kits/events/computex2009/Presentation_MobiliyfortheMasses.pdf

Move to slide 21 and you'll see it there :)

Wasn't there a 486SL/2 or something as well? My memory fails me.

Checked up the specs of my 386 laptop, it's only a SX/16.
I have seen SL/SLC models around though.

yeah other than that and their headsets

i don't think i want to now

i feel retarded enough here, if i go to Anand's I would get banned for not knowing anything good enough to post

ur welcome, my dear apprentice, i will grow up

i have to live up to being a veteran now, funny how i got to veteran after only 8 months here, i should get a medal/badge, Tom's should do that

then again we would be overrun with Veteran noobs 😀

If I were to insult you I would do so in such a way as to leave no doubt of my intention. :finger:

It's in the THG database of smiley's.
