AMD XP to AMD 64

Just wanted to see what some general opinons would be.

I am currently running an Baron based XP, and gonna be buying a Athlon 64 cpu next week.

The board I will be using will be a Msi K8n Neo 2 Plat. I was looking at the 3200+ venice and 3500+ SD core. Both run a 10x multiplier, and I do plan to overclock alittle. So from what i've seen these were suppose to be good. I'm currently running PC3200ram. For me to get the best overclocking experience out of this setup, would I need to upgrade in the near future to PC4000 or higher memory?

The Venice 3200+ is $239.99 CDN
The SD 3500+ is $364.99 CDN

The venice is in stock and the SD is still ETA:coming soon

The cache shouldn't make that much of a difference that would be worth the Price difference?

Yesterday I also picked up a XP90 and 92mm 48CFM fan. Should be enough for some mild overclocking.

I have heard the DFI is better for overclocking, but the MSI board I already own. Bought it about 4 months ago, been sitting on it waiting for the right time to upgrade. I have an AGP X800XTPE so no PCI E for me just yet.

I don't have an MSI board, but from what I've heard they're great boards, if you can get one without problems. I guess that means QC isn't that great, and it may take a few RMA's.

That depends on the RAM - some PC3200 OC's pretty well, some doesn't. What RAM do you have now? In either case, you can run your memory on a divider - you'll lose a bit of memory performance, but still be able to OC the CPU. I guess it depends on your budget. If you're trying to not spend if you don't need to, see how your ram oc's and if it doesn't, then get better.

Wow - 50% more for 512k of cache... not worth the price to me.

Mike.

Get the venice core 3500, it has an 11X multiplier, so is easier to OC. Most ram should get you to 220 or so. If you want higher, use the divider, or more voltage and poorer timings.

Yep, everything is up and running great, man these chips run cool. Anyways right now I got her at 2.4Ghz running a 240fsb HHT 4x ram set to DDR 333 in bios. which runs right at 200mhz after the FSB overclock. so since the ram isn't being overclocked. I am able to keep tight memory timmings. 2-2-3-10 1t.

System runs great, I prime95 tested for stability and Gamed for a couple hours. Chip never broke 45c full load. out of the 2 games that I installed so Far. CS Source saw the biggest improvment. Man that game doesn't like AMD XP chips. before I was able to play at 1280x1024 no AA/AF Fps was good, but with alot of action onscreen lows of 30.

With the New setup. I am playing at 1280x1024 2x AA 4xAF and FPS never drops below 60fps, and i'm seeing highs of 150fps.

if your a CS S player and running a fairly highend card on a AMD XP chip, I suggest u upgrade asap.

O forgot one thing the voltage is set to 1.525 in bios, but not sure if its reading it correctly cause when I check with CPU Z it show my vcore at 1.45. I'm gonna go back and check with stock voltage.
