Until some integrator with a Barcelona sample leaks some benches, Barcelona isnt even on the retail horizon.

I am going to laugh my ass off if Penryn launches before Barcelona.

Desktop K10s certainly look to be a pipedream for 07.

I dont think Intel wants to launch Penryn before K10.
They've got C2D and QFX out right now, pulling in cash for nothing. Intel paid for their 65nm R&D with crapburst/P4, and if they havent finished paying off the R&D on C2D/C2Q Uarch, they should be damn close so every C2D/C2Q bought is clean money for them. Holding off Penryn as long as possible maximizes that income. Additionally, dropping Penryn after K10 gives them another advantages. It allows them to set the introductory price lower than K10. It may look better to come out with a lower price than to rather than set the price, then have to lower it if K10 launches cheaper. It looks reactionary. Whoever launches their chip first, AMD or Intel, is going to wind up reacting to the second-comers prices. This also gives Intel another advantage. AMD isnt going to want to sell K10 cheap. If Intel launches first, and has to guesstimate AMDs K10 pricing to try and set a lower Penryn initial price, they could concieveably loose out on potential profit. By waiting they get to see what AMD does. EX: If intel decides to launch Penryn @ $400/bin 1000, but AMD launches K10 @ $600/bin 1000, then Intel can actually launch @ $500-$550/bin 1000. This works both ways too---whats applies to Intel also applies to AMD as far as initial pricing, but Intel is under no pressure to drop Penryn right now. C2D and C2Q arent even 1 year old yet, and they have no competition in performance or high end value.

Honestly, it doesnt make sence for Intel to want to launch first, except for bragging rights. That in and of itself is a pretty powerful motivator, but Intel seemed to grow a brain last year, and Im guessing they wont go for the quicker smaller victory, but go for the bigger, longer term gains. AMD doesnt have too much of a choice here. They have to get K10 out the door as soon as its ready to go to stem the flow of cash/market share.

How many baseball teams are there? How many CPU companies are there?

You may not be an ardent devotee (I'm just being nice by saying that because I think everybody on the forumz would disagree with that statement), but you most certainly are an AMD enthusiast. So, you are a fan of AMD. Case closed.

Well, if the respin of Barcelona wasn't bad enough (I am not sure if it will cause a delay, though - depends on how much has to be redesigned), the paragraph below it states that there may be issues with the release/introduction of HD 2600 and 2400. it appears the upcoming product release of the HD 2600 and HD 2400 video cards from AMD/ATI are in a bit of trouble at this point.
After the UVD thing, I don't think AMD/ATI needs another R600 fiasco on their hands.

Although the motherboards are being shown, which is a good sign, but lacking final silicon, those same motherboards might have to be re-worked, depending on changes to final spin/stepping.

I feel kinda bad for AMD's partners: Sapphire, HIS, etc, For 6 months, they had nothing with which to compete in the high end except overpriced X1900s. Then when R600 finally did arrive, these same partners get screwed with the UVD bs.

Now HD 2600 and HD 2400 are in a bit of trouble? Yikes....

Nice avatar. 😀

lol. I don't know who originally had it, but I vow to keep it until jack comes back. My last avatar was even awesomer though.

I wouldnt hold your breath waiting for JJ to return.

Haha. Pretty soon every single person on the forumz will have a "Jack: Come Back!" avatar besides Baron.

Oh well.

Read your quote from me and perhaps my feelings on the matter will be come apparent.

O topic though, Barcelona is up and running at Computex and Fuad quoted an industry source as saying that major server vendors will get them in "late July."

The usual grain of salt included, though it still seems like what AMD has been saying all along. Sampling in June, shipping in July, systems around August.

common Baron, even I that Im a fan of AMD-ATI.. get scared of your behavior.
you're not a "FAN", you're an ASSKISSER in an almost beyond insane way, a la sharikou.

Yeah... the UVD is another "what the heck were they thinking?" moment for me.

If the physical hardware simply isn't present, the way things have gone seem to indicate that AMD's own staff didn't understand exactly what was going on. For journalists to miss something like this is one thing, but channel partners printing boxes with non-existent features on them is entirely different.
...
So where do we stand now? Well, board partners who've already printed boxes with UVD labels and retailers who list UVD as a feature of the HD 2900 XT will need to go back and revise their materials. This is certain to cause plenty of headaches with everyone involved in the making, marketing, retailing, and purchasing of the HD 2900 XT. Journalists have had to go back and correct articles to reflect the lack of UVD support in R600, and everyone is looking to AMD and wondering just what that was all about.
...
With our go-to man for graphics at AMD, Will Willis, having quit shortly after the R600 launch, and most of the other PR people we used to work with from ATI already absent, we have been a little worried about the situation. Losing Will will certainly be a blow for AMD PR, as he was by far the most helpful guy around. Having a key member of the PR team depart just after a launch like this also doesn't feel good. Hopefully, the replacement AMD finds for Will can fill his shoes, and hopefully we will get some answers soon.

That doesn't sound good.

Wow... Penryn before BArcelona.. Jack predicted it right all along.

Yes, Jack did speculate about that quite a while back. Although, to give the Devil his due, I seem to recall the Inquirer predicted this might happen way way way back.

I mostly agree... however, one could argue that Intel would release early to acquire existing AMD server customers. There are substantial switching costs involved for these companies, so offering a superior product with no competition is a way to lock AMD out of it's VITAL source of future revenue... its own customer upgrades.

I'd bet that Intel launches the server chip ASAP and sits on the desktop version till AMD has a REAL chip out there (2nd half 2008).

Thats true, but I suspect Intel is a lot closer to readiness with Penryn then they've let on. At this point, Im guessing they could easily beat K10 out the door. With that in mind, just as with the C2D core Xeons, I dont think any corporation is going to want to be the 'test pilots' for either K10 or Penryns, so unless a company absolutely has to buy one or the other, I dont think were going to see this big huge rush on either chip that some people believe. Not for at minimum 1 quarter, if not 2. So I dont think either company is going to be loosing or gaining much in the server market with their new CPUs, at least until the CPUs have proven themselves. In that respect, IMO Intel is in a very slightly better position as Penryn is a very slightly modified shrink of the proven C2D at a new and unproven node while K10 is a radical redesign of K8, and as such unproven. Either way, I dont think any company wants to risk profits on either 'unproven' product. Sit, wait, let some other company(suckers) take the risk, then choose and take the safer plunge.

The days of anyone taking Intel at its word were over years ago, and I think the days of anyone (except the fanboys) taking AMD at their word ended Q1 this year. Both companies are going to have to wait to see profitability on new products as coporate customers wait to see if the new products are for real, or just so much hot-marketing-air.

Not singling you out Baron, yours just happened to be the last post in the chain.

Can everyone stop turning this into a flame thread now? I think its gone on long enough. JJ is gone. Get over it. Stop venting your personal frustrations....its not going to bring him back.

Interesting. Man this is a crappy time to be a fan of AMD. 🙁 🙁

It's a crappy time to be a hardware enthusiast right now, period. AMD fan or not.

No way. How can you say that? One can buy 2GB DDR2 ram for $60 today. One can buy a fast dual core processor for under $100. In the high end you have Quad core CPUs and Geforce 8800 GTXs! Now is a great time to be a computer enthusiast. Whether you have a ton of cash to spend, or are on a tight budget, what you can get for your $$$ is simply crazy now.

A year ago an AMD X2 3800+ was $300. Now for that cash you can get a decent motherboard, a faster CPU than the 3800+, 2GB ram and have cash left over!

It's a crappy time to be AMD, though. They need to get into gear and launch Barcelona/Agena etc. and the 2600 and 2400 video cards. They need to get R650 done and dusted to give Nvidia some real competition in the high end.

Wow, I drop by only to find JJ has left? Seriously, if deep-sixing Baron's ass will bring Jack back, then you shouldn't hesitate to ban him.

Hell, my roommate was banned because a mod thought we are the same person. Speaking of my roommate, it was JKflipflop that said Penny will beat Barcy out the door. But I'm sure Jack knew that, too.

A: Thanks for comparing me to Jack. That was actually kind of nice.

B: No, I'm not putting words in your mouth at all. The only thing I did was make a point, and my point was that you were wrong. You can't handle being wrong because in your head you're always right, so you start USING ALL CAPS AND BECOMING INCOHERENT!

Anyway, I'm not a baron-hater, but I really wish you could just admit it when you are wrong. Stop taking yourself so seriously man. 😀

I'm sorry sir, but im not the one spreading fud and bull, for then acting like "im the victim" to later act like a e-toughtguy man when defending your lies with sword and cape..
Im the one that is surprised that after all the verbal abuse you toss( to anyone who dares to prove you're wrong) noone as banned you...

*edit* as a matter of fact, this as nothing to do with Jack, been actually watching the forum website for quite enought to understand your behavior.
95% of your stuff is agresive, and 99% of these are when you get confronted with real information.

Interesting. Man this is a crappy time to be a fan of AMD. 🙁 🙁

How can you be a fan of a company?

Did YOU really just say that? The the queen of all fanboys.
Seriously. That's priceless.

And don't be an idiot, Baron. You can be a fan of a company just like you can be a fan of a baseball team.

fan 2 (fân) Pronunciation Key
n. An ardent devotee; an enthusiast.
Source: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fan

So if you are an ardent devotee or enthusiast with regards to AMD and/or their hardware, you are a fan. Can you really be so dim?

How many baseball teams are there? How many CPU companies are there?

Baron,

You're the biggest fanboy, period, since 9-inch has left. You defend AMD to the grave and use illogical arguments to do so. You never have anything good to say about Intel.

I admit that I am rooting for AMD, but I can objectively look at things. I want AMD to gain market share and be more of an equal to Intel. HOWEVER, I recognize that AMD is in BIG TROUBLE right now. You refuse to think ANY negative thoughts about AMD and always spin things to be positive for AMD. You're an AMD Fanboy and I don't care what analogy you use to try to disprove me.

What happened to Jack?
I've been gone from here for long...

Apparently he left because the mods won't ban MoronBatrix. Rob, Jack is the only thing keeping alot of folks coming back. Hell, he's the reason I'm here right now. Allowing Jack to leave because you don't want to ban this asshat is a pretty bad move dude.

I don't understand this.. they were a bit like a comedian and his sideshow.. i always found their interactions pretty entertaining 😛

How can I be wrong about whether I'm a fan of any company? Like my location says,

in the back of your mind haunting.

Gullibility thy name is The Brood.

Also, if I took myself seriously, I'd be on here stalking others like you. I mean I would never put some other guys avatar as mine.

That's kinda gay coach.
