Annoying Allies?

this may have been posted before, but i havent read it, and ive been
looking for it for ages. these two console commands for HL2 make the
sections with the human allies more bearable:

"NPC_citizen_auto_player_squad 0" - stops allies automatically joining
your squad

"NPC_citizen_auto_player_squad_allow_use 1" - lets you use your 'use'
key to start/stop allies following you, similar to the system in HL1
with scientists and barneys.

you can put them in your config.cfg file to get them to work from the
off, but i havent tested them; they may cause problems in some areas, i
dunno. plus i dont know if they affect the antlions.

i found the sections with the rebels much more manageable with these;
your allies will actually stay where you tell them to!

I managed OK by letting the NPCs fend for themselves. I'd send them on
ahead to scout and tease out the combine. Later on, when they keep
respawning, that's kind of useful since they do provide some extra
firepower and distract the combine from Gordon. In the big battles I
didn't even look to see where they were.

Yes, that's exactly what I do. Also, it is good to have a medic around when
you are short on health.

Heh heh. The first time I played HL2 I went through great efforts
(initially) to keep my squad alive - a habit I picked up in OPPOSING
FORCE. Once I realized that they were spawning as needed, they were
cannon fodder.

yeah, there were some odd moments when my entire squad would be killed
only for 3 new guys to turn up almost instantaneously; sometimes there
is an infinite supply, usually at the sections when they're most likley
to get in your way.

But the medics seem to be the most suicidal and the respawning seems
erratic - sometimes they turn up like ant-lions (pretty quick) and others
you have to wait ages for your squad to reappear

I've just completed the first Strider mission in "Follow Freeman" ( 3
Striders in the courtyard after disabling the suppressor (by shutting
down the 3 generators)). I got SO much grief from the wife because I
kept pushing the rocket carrying medic out of the tunnel under the
fence so she would get killed by a strider and I could use the gravity
gun to collect her 3 rockets.... (YES I hadn't found the crate full of
rockets at this point!).

IMHO an excellent level, surpassed only by Ravenholme, but there again
I've yet to finish the game !

Wow, good catch. I'll have to try this. Does it keep them from clogging
up the stairwell during the last Strider fight?

Now, we need a way to make them stop tripping hoppers when you're
standing next to them

Hahaaha, I bet my mother would have a heart attack if she knew I'd
actually bought an M rated game. 🙂 I was reminiscing on how gruesome
HL2 actually is.. Beautiful..
