Annoying boot problems

Hello all

Using a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro which I've had up & running fine for about 8
months but have experienced the following problems recently: -

1. PC would boot but the USB hub wouldn't initialise unless I unplugged
everything from the hub except the mouse and did a cold re-start. I replaced
the Belkin hub with a linksys and this has solved that problem.

2. After sorting out the above problem, from cold boot, the PS2 keyboard is
sometimes not detected, I have to re-start (cold or soft reset) before XP
will detect the Keyboard.

3. For the last few days the PC will display the WinXP splash screen and
then nothing just a blank screen (XP will then start if I do a soft re-set).

I'd really like some pointers on diagnosing this problem as I think my PC
may be heading for a general *breakdown*. Thus far I've not received any
error messages (e.g. Windows failed to load ...) so I'm not quite sure what
the problem is.

BTW I don't believe the overclocking is causing the problem as temperatures
etc seem ok (~ 58 oC under 100% load) and demanding games (e.g. Far Cry) run
fine.

TIA

BillL

The problem is your PSU. Though it's an Antec one it is small in terms
of power. Get an Antec TruPower 480 or 550.

If you want to verify it is a power problem, Leave only primary
master, 512mb,remove cd/dvd devices and do a few cold boots. Also
saphire 9700 draws a lot of current at startup, so it alone maybe the
cause of power problems. Put a "light" graphic card(if you have a
spare one).

If you do the above and still get the same problems recognizing
keyboards and usb, then either the PSU has been deteriorated(due to
the heavy overload you have put it for 8 months) , or the overclocking
is to blame(which may have cause some sort of hardware deterioration
to cpu and/or motherboard).

Power supply, indeed !!
This is an over clock problem
58° C for this device is way to high.
Go back to 266mHz FSB and watch the problems disappear.

Thanks for the advice and help.

Well I've traced the problem to having the generic USB hub and/or my Kingmax
USB 256MB drive connected to the PC when it powers on. The problem is
reproducible in that the PC boots fine without the hub and/or drive
connected but the problems return when I reconnect these devices.

I don't think that a CPU load of 58oC is desirable but it is more likely to
take a few years off the normal life (10 - 15 years??) of the processor than
cause catastrophic problems (yes if it was 65 oC + under idle conditions I'd
be more concerned). I'm also running PC3200 RAM which is rated for a 400 MHz
(DDR) speed, besides no way am I going back to a 1.47 GHz CPU when I'm
currently running @ 2.2 GHz - particularly as the CPU only cost about £35
from new ;o)

I've been looking to upgrade the PSU for some time as it wouldn't hurt to
have a bit more power particularly as I am stressing the system by over
clocking it. I'm tempted to go for a higher wattage Antec TruPower as long
as the noise levels are still ok (e.g. no more than + 3dBA) than my current
PSU. Also the boot-up problems could be caused by a lack of watts (though
the USB hub I plug the generic hub into is powered off the mains).

Regards

BillL
