Another Maddening Keyboard Mapping Problem

A maddening problem: I've always used "Alt-0189" to get the fraction
"1/2". But recently something has caused this keyboard combination to
give me a capital "S" instead.

I've made sure all my regional language settings are set to U.S.
English, and I've made sure the keyboard in the bios is set to U.S. as
well. In my word processing programs now I notice when I go to insert a
symbol and a Times New Roman character map comes up, the capital "S"
actually appears on the map where the fraction used to be. If I use the
Windows program, "charmap", I get the proper character map displayed on
the screen (with the fraction visible), but when I do a copy and paste
it shows up in my document as a capital "S".

The only thing different I've done recently is to install NOD32
antivirus (perhaps some type of Polish setting is taking over my
system?), and I've also installed a new Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard
version #1.0A (made in China) with the Microsoft Intellitype drivers.

I've tried two other keyboards --- same problem. I've uninstalled NOD32
to no avail. The only thing I haven't done yet is sift through the
registry or reinstall WindowsXP (SP2) --- which I'm trying to avoid
doing if possible. This is especially bothersome because I do
professional writing at work all day long for my industry, and the
nature of my writing is that I tend to use a lot of fractions in my
descriptions!

This is all on a Compaq AthlonXP 1700+.

Any ideas or advice???

Thanks!

Try uninstalling the keyboard drivers by rolling back in the device manager.
